Kangwon Land, a prominent South Korean resort operator, is set to host the highly anticipated '2025 Untan Godo Skyrace' on May 10th and 11th, 2025, marking a significant step in its ambition to establish itself as a leading hub for mountain tourism, capitalizing on the rich natural resources of the region. The event has garnered remarkable interest, attracting approximately 10,000 applicants, with a final selection of around 3,000 runners, including 250 international athletes hailing from approximately 20 countries, all eager to experience the breathtaking trails of the historic Untan Godo.

The Untan Godo, meaning "coal transportation road," is a network of trails steeped in history, originally used to transport coal from the mines of the Taebaek Mountains. Recognizing its scenic beauty and historical significance, Kangwon Land has been instrumental in transforming this former industrial route into a premier destination for hiking and trail running. The trails wind through lush forests, offering panoramic views of the mountainous landscape, making it an increasingly popular location for outdoor enthusiasts both domestically and internationally.

The upcoming Skyrace is not just a testament to the growing popularity of trail running in South Korea but also highlights the international appeal of the Untan Godo. The participation of 250 athletes from around 20 countries underscores the trail's reputation as a world-class running destination. Skyrunning, a discipline of mountain running that involves running at high altitudes on steep and technical terrain, is gaining traction globally, and the Untan Godo's challenging yet stunning landscape provides an ideal setting for such an event.

Building on the success of its inaugural event last year, the 'Kids Race' will once again be a highlight, catering to families and fostering a love for outdoor activities from a young age. This year's children's races will see the participation of 110 infants and 110 elementary school students, demonstrating the event's commitment to inclusivity and community engagement. This focus on family-oriented activities aligns with the broader vision of Kangwon Land to create a multi-generational appeal for its mountain tourism offerings.

Beyond the races themselves, Kangwon Land is curating a vibrant atmosphere with a variety of events designed to engage both participants and local residents. A key feature this year will be the introduction of food booths showcasing local specialties, providing a taste of the region's culinary heritage. Complementing this will be a local festival featuring outdoor busking performances, creating a lively and interactive experience that fosters a sense of community and celebrates the local culture. This integration of local elements is crucial for Kangwon Land's strategy to become a truly integrated mountain resort that benefits the surrounding community.

Choi Cheol-kyu, the Acting CEO of Kangwon Land, expressed his enthusiasm for the event and the potential of the Untan Godo, stating, "Untan Godo is the best trail course recognized even by foreigners. We aim to become the nation's top mountain resort that drives regional economic development by continuously hosting large-scale events that reflect the unique characteristics of Untan Godo." His statement underscores the strategic importance of events like the Skyrace in positioning Kangwon Land as a leading mountain tourism destination and a key driver of economic growth for the region.

In addition to the Skyrace, Kangwon Land is further diversifying its mountain tourism offerings by hosting 'Daengdaeng Trekking,' the largest dog-friendly trekking event in Korea. Scheduled for two weekends, May 17-18 and May 24-25, this event caters to the growing number of pet owners and promotes outdoor activities that can be enjoyed with canine companions. The choice of Untan Godo for this event highlights the trail's suitability for a wide range of outdoor activities beyond just running.

Rounding out this impressive lineup of events is the '11th Sky Forest Path Walking Festival,' set to take place on May 31st. This festival will likely offer a more leisurely way to experience the beauty of the region's trails, appealing to a broader audience and further solidifying Kangwon Land's commitment to promoting outdoor recreation.

Kangwon Land's strategic focus on developing mountain tourism through events like the Untan Godo Skyrace and the 'Daengdaeng Trekking' aligns with a global trend towards nature-based tourism and outdoor adventure. The transformation of the former coal mining region into a hub for recreational activities not only preserves the area's natural beauty but also creates new economic opportunities for the local community.

The success of the 2025 Untan Godo Skyrace, with its strong international participation and focus on community engagement, will be a crucial indicator of Kangwon Land's progress in achieving its goal of becoming South Korea's premier mountain resort. By leveraging the unique appeal of the Untan Godo and organizing high-quality events, Kangwon Land is poised to make a significant contribution to the regional economy and enhance South Korea's reputation as a destination for outdoor adventure. The blend of sporting competition, cultural experiences, and natural beauty offered by these events promises to attract a diverse range of visitors and solidify Kangwon Land's position at the forefront of mountain tourism in the nation.
