Cheonan – The Cheonan City Youth Counseling and Welfare Center, under the Cheonan City Youth Foundation, has taken a significant step towards expanding cultural and artistic participation and fostering social skills for developmentally disabled youth. On May 24, the "Chaeumbyeol Choir" held its successful inauguration ceremony at the Cheonan City Youth Complex Community Center, marking a meaningful beginning for unlocking the potential of developmentally disabled youth.
The Birth and Goals of the 'Chaeumbyeol Choir'
This inauguration ceremony was more than just an event; it officially launched the 'Chaeumbyeol Choir.' The choir consists of 20 developmentally disabled youth and 20 university student mentors who will support them, bringing the total membership to 40. This demonstrates the center's deep commitment to providing professional music education opportunities for developmentally disabled youth and promoting their social and emotional development through interaction with university student mentors.
In particular, this choir focuses on maximizing the positive impact of cultural and artistic activities on the lives of developmentally disabled youth. Musical activities are known to aid in language and cognitive development, improve concentration, and effectively relieve stress. Furthermore, the process of working towards a common goal in a choir helps cultivate cooperation and a sense of belonging, allowing members to experience a sense of accomplishment and boost their self-esteem.
Collaboration with Nazareth University and Professional Staffing
For the successful operation of the 'Chaeumbyeol Choir,' the Cheonan City Youth Counseling and Welfare Center signed a business agreement with the Department of Social Welfare at Nazareth University. Nazareth University, with its extensive experience and expertise in special education, will play a crucial role in the choir's qualitative growth through this agreement by providing necessary human and material resources and connecting university students to participate in mentoring programs for developmentally disabled youth. This is regarded as an exemplary case of academia and the local community collaborating to support the growth of developmentally disabled youth.
During the inauguration ceremony, appointment and commissioning certificates were also presented to professional staff, including the conductor and accompanist. They will provide systematic music education to the choir members and lead the overall rehearsal process. The addition of professional staff establishes a foundation for the 'Chaeumbyeol Choir' to move beyond mere leisure activities, improve musical skills, and even present high-quality performances.
The 'Chaeumbyeol Choir's' Steps Towards the Future
The 'Chaeumbyeol Choir' plans to engage in active regular practices and recitals in the future. The Cheonan City Youth Counseling and Welfare Center will support the choir members in continuously developing their musical abilities and will arrange various performance opportunities in conjunction with the local community. Through this, it is expected to provide a stepping stone for developmentally disabled youth to showcase their talents, communicate with society, and grow into healthy members of the community.
Han Sang-kyung, CEO of the Cheonan City Youth Foundation, expressed his aspiration, stating, "We hope the Chaeumbyeol Choir becomes a stepping stone for the growth of developmentally disabled youth, and we will continue our efforts to promote youth participation in cultural and artistic activities." As such, the center plans to make multifaceted efforts to help developmentally disabled youth confidently establish themselves as members of society through cultural and artistic activities and lead happy lives.
Various Support Activities of the Cheonan City Youth Counseling and Welfare Center
Meanwhile, in addition to the 'Chaeumbyeol Choir,' the Cheonan City Youth Counseling and Welfare Center operates various support programs for youth and parents experiencing psychological difficulties. They assist in the emotional stability and healthy growth of youth through individual and phone counseling, psychological testing, and more. Youth aged 9 to 24 can participate in the center's various programs by phone (1388 or 041-622-1388) or by visiting the center. The center provides solutions to various problems faced by youth in the region and contributes to creating a healthy youth culture.
The inauguration of the 'Chaeumbyeol Choir' will open up new possibilities for developmentally disabled youth and serve as a crucial opportunity to bring positive change to their lives. The Cheonan City Youth Counseling and Welfare Center will continue to provide unwavering interest and support to ensure that developmentally disabled youth can fully realize their potential as members of society and lead happy lives.
