Costa Rica: Where Nature Truly Nourishes the Soul

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - The well-worn adage "Nature feeds the soul" finds its most vibrant embodiment in the lush landscapes and exhilarating adventures of Costa Rica. For Linda Johansen and her intrepid group of travelers, a recent 13-day expedition from January 17th to 29th proved to be a testament to this truth, as they conquered the Central American nation with unbridled joy and mutual encouragement.

Their journey commenced with an exceptionally early 2 a.m. charter on January 17th, a mere day after Johansen's 76th birthday – a milestone she still finds hard to believe. What followed was a whirlwind of experiences that belied the local saying "Pura Vida," meaning "the simple life." Far from simple, their Costa Rican sojourn was packed with invigorating challenges embraced by a diverse group ranging in age from their 40s to their 80s.

Undeterred by torrential downpours in the mystical cloud and rain forests, the group enthusiastically trekked through the verdant jungles surrounding the majestic Arenal volcano. A highlight of their exploration was a breathtaking traverse across eight suspended bridges high in the forest canopy, offering awe-inspiring vistas of the rich biodiversity below. The steep ascent to these vantage points was met with determined steps, each rewarded by the unparalleled beauty of Costa Rica's flora, fauna, and captivating wildlife.

Costa Rica, renowned as the birthplace of ziplining, provided an unforgettable adrenaline rush. Soaring through the jungle canopy at exhilarating speeds across eight thrilling zip lines became a defining experience. The group's spirited motto, "Coming in hot," often barely preceded delighted screams as they landed at each station. Remarkably, the oldest members of the group tackled every zip with boundless energy, serving as an inspiration to all.

Their adventure continued deep into the heart of Tortuguero National Park, a remote haven accessible via a scenic two-hour boat ride through intricate jungle waterways to the unique Evergreen Lodge. The park teemed with wildlife encounters: the languid grace of sloths in the trees, the vibrant flashes of scarlet macaws in flight, an astonishing array of colorful birdsong, and the iconic, rainbow-hued toucan. While the elusive jaguar remained unseen, the group learned about successful conservation efforts leading to a rise in their population – a positive sign for the region's biodiversity. More readily visible were the massive crocodiles basking near the riverbanks, alongside their smaller cousins, the caiman. Although the gentle manatees inhabit these waters, a sighting eluded the group, leaving it as a cherished bucket-list item for Johansen.

A particularly impactful visit was to the Sea Turtle Research Station, where the group gained valuable insights into the dedicated conservation programs aimed at protecting the endangered green sea turtle. They learned about the incredible reproductive capacity of these creatures, which can lay between 80 and 200 eggs at a time, yet sadly, only a small fraction survive to maturity. In the wild, these resilient reptiles can live up to an impressive 90 years. Costa Rica's unwavering commitment to environmental preservation resonated deeply with the travelers, underscoring the nation's dedication to safeguarding its natural heritage for generations to come.

The journey also offered cultural immersion. A visit to a cacao plantation in the Tirimbina Rainforest provided a fascinating glimpse into the journey of the cacao bean from its source to the delectable chocolate, often revered as "the food of the gods." Later, a unique experience unfolded as the group floated down the Peñas Blancas River on a tranquil safari, culminating in a heartwarming lunch hosted by two elderly, unmarried sisters from a local family. Their simple yet profoundly joyful way of life left a lasting impression. Their immaculately clean dirt-floored home, the lovingly prepared meal from homegrown ingredients, and the enduring presence of their Christmas decorations – a tradition upheld until the entire family gathers to take them down, regardless of the date – radiated a sense of warmth and connection.

After a week filled with exhilarating activities, many in the group indulged in rejuvenating spa treatments at the Hotel Lomas del Volcán. The open-air massage rooms, nestled amidst the soothing sounds of the jungle and gentle raindrops, offered a perfect sanctuary for relaxation.

With their Costa Rican adventure drawing to a close, the group journeyed to the Pacific coast, where they enjoyed a stay at the stunning Los Sueños Marriott. This beachfront resort boasted a marina, a golf course, and an inviting lazy river pool. Despite the increased humidity compared to the Caribbean side, the travelers enthusiastically engaged in games and enjoyed the resort's amenities. Their final night was spent back in San José at the DoubleTree Cariari Hotel, where they honored their tradition of a heartfelt farewell celebration for their exceptional guide, Marta. In true Danish spirit, they sang their "Skal" song, presented a card filled with expressions of gratitude, and offered a well-deserved tip. Marta was deeply touched by their appreciation.

The trip held one final, delightful surprise. As their farewell dinner concluded, Johansen was astonished to hear familiar voices calling her name. Mark and Robyn Massie, dear friends who had lived near her for years before relocating, were unexpectedly present, knowing several members of the group. This joyous and serendipitous reunion provided the perfect heartwarming conclusion to an already unforgettable journey.

While the wonders of Costa Rica captivated their hearts, the unexpected reunion with friends served as a gentle reminder of the comforts of home – their town, their families, and their familiar way of life.

Costa Rica, though a small nation, boasts diverse coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. While travel between the two requires time, each offers a distinct charm. The Pacific coast is famed for its pristine white-sand beaches, vibrant surf towns, and diverse ecosystems, while the Caribbean side exudes a lush, vibrant energy and a rich cultural heritage, albeit with a higher propensity for rainfall.

Linda Johansen, reflecting on the incredible experience, shared, "Costa Rica truly feeds the soul. The challenges we embraced, the natural beauty that surrounded us, and the heartwarming connections we made have created lasting memories. Age is no barrier to adventure when the spirit is willing."

Looking ahead, Collette Travel will be offering a September 2025 tour of South America, encompassing the wonders of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the breathtaking Iguazú Falls – a designated Wonder of the World. Proceeds from this upcoming trip, combined with funds raised from a Mediterranean journey in March, will be donated to S.Y. Aquatics and Olive Crest Hope Refuge, dedicated to supporting young survivors of sex trafficking in Santa Barbara County.

All net commissions from these trips are donated to local non-profit organizations, further highlighting the spirit of giving that accompanied this remarkable Costa Rican adventure.

Until the next journey beckons, the spirit of "Pura Vida" – the pure life – will undoubtedly remain with this group of adventurous souls.
