— Hangeul Is Peace — by Kim Seul-ong
As your historic concert on March 21 draws near, I write to you with a heart full of hope.
Very soon, you will take the stage in the heart of Korea—at Gyeongbokgung Palace and Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul, where centuries of living history breathe beneath your feet. This is no ordinary concert venue. It was on this very ground, over 580 years ago, that King Sejong the Great created and proclaimed Hangeul—the Korean alphabet—for all his people.
I am Kim Seul-ong, a Hangeul scholar who was honored alongside BTS in October 2018, when the civic organization 'Our Language Preservation Movement' (우리말살리는겨레모임) named BTS as its 'Champion of the Korean Language.' It is that cherished connection, and my lifelong devotion to Hangeul research, that compels me to write this letter.
The world today groans under the weight of war and conflict. Your music has always carried a powerful message of peace—but the fact that this performance takes place at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the very birthplace of Hangeul, lends it a rare and profound historical significance. I humbly ask you to carry Hangeul's message of peace to the world.
If possible, it would be wonderful to hear a Hangeul-themed song such as "Nara Malsami" (나라 말싸미, lyrics and music by Kang Sun-ye and Jeon Young-jun). But if preparation is not feasible, even a single sentence would carry tremendous meaning:
"Hangeul is Peace."
Hangeul was born of a spirit that says: let everyone freely share knowledge and communicate without barriers. Like water finding its natural course, Hangeul flows to all people equally, discriminating against no one. Perhaps even today's wars are, at their root, born from the breakdown of this very kind of open, equal communication.
Hangeul carries within it a cosmic philosophy of peace—one that unites Heaven (하늘), Earth (땅), and People (사람) as one. It holds that every person is Heaven itself, and Heaven is every person: a spirit of radical equality that applies to everyone, everywhere, at all times. This philosophy is precisely what our world most desperately needs today.
We understand that English will naturally take center stage at a global concert. Yet if the universal beauty of Hangeul could be expressed—even through your costumes or stage design—Hangeul itself will become a living symbol of peace, reaching the hearts of people across the world.
BTS, you have already moved the world with the power of your art and language. Now, I ask you to scatter the seeds of peace that Hangeul carries—across the whole of humanity.
Hangeul is Peace.

세기적인 공연을 앞둔 방탄소년단[BTS] 여러분께
— 한글이 평화입니다 —

3월 21일, 역사적인 공연을 앞두고 이 편지를 씁니다.
여러분은 머지않아 대한민국의 심장, 세계 문화의 중심지인 서울—그것도 수백 년의 역사가 살아 숨 쉬는 경복궁과 광화문 광장—에서 전 세계를 놀라게 할 것입니다. 이 무대는 단순한 공연장이 아닙니다. 바로 그 땅에서, 580여 년 전 세종대왕이 온 백성을 위해 한글을 창제하고 반포하셨습니다.
저는 시민단체 '우리말살리는겨레모임'이 2018년 10월 9일 한글날에 방탄소년단을 '우리말 으뜸 알림이'로 선정할 때, '우리말 으뜸 지킴이'로 함께 뽑힌 한글학자 김슬옹입니다. 그 소중한 인연으로, 그리고 한글을 평생 연구해 온 학자로서, 이 편지를 드립니다.
지금 전 세계는 전쟁의 아픔으로 신음하고 있습니다. 여러분의 음악 자체가 이미 강력한 평화 메시지이지만, 이번 공연의 무대가 바로 한글이 탄생한 경복궁이라는 점은 특별한 역사적 의미를 지닙니다. 부디 한글에 담긴 평화의 정신을 전 세계에 전해 주십시오.
「나라 말싸미」(강순예·전영준 작사·작곡)와 같은 한글 노래를 함께 불러 주시면 더없이 좋겠습니다. 하지만 준비가 어려우시다면, 짧은 한마디만으로도 충분합니다.
"한글이 평화입니다."
한글은 누구나 쉽게 지식과 정보를 나누고 소통하라는 정신으로 태어났습니다. 물이 흐르듯 자연스럽게, 어떤 사람도 차별하지 않는 문자—그것이 한글입니다. 어쩌면 오늘의 전쟁도, 이런 열린 소통이 막힌 자리에서 비롯된 것일지 모릅니다.
한글에는 하늘·땅·사람을 하나로 잇는 우주적 평화 정신이 담겨 있습니다. 사람이 곧 하늘이고 하늘이 곧 사람이라는, 언제 어디서나 누구에게나 평등하게 적용되는 그 정신 말입니다. 이 정신이야말로 인류가 지금 가장 절실히 필요로 하는 가치입니다.
전 세계를 향한 공연이니 주요 언어가 영어가 될 수밖에 없음을 압니다. 그러나 한글의 보편적 아름다움을—의상이나 무대 디자인 한 곳에라도—담아내어 주신다면, 한글은 그 자체로 평화의 상징이 되어 전 세계인의 가슴에 닿을 것입니다.
BTS여러분, 여러분은 이미 세계의 언어를 움직여 왔습니다. 이제 그 힘으로 한글이 품은 평화의 씨앗을 온 세상에 뿌려 주십시오.
한글은 평화입니다.
