Dongdaejeon Library in Daejeon is set to fully launch its 2025 first-half toddler and children's reading club program starting May 27. The initiative aims to foster self-directed reading habits and support creative post-reading activities for toddlers and children. This reading club goes beyond simple reading, offering a diverse range of programs that encourage children to grow with books through reading games and integrated activities.
Age-Specific Reading Programs to Spark Reading Interest
Dongdaejeon Library provides specialized reading programs tailored to the age and developmental stages of the participating children.
'Chaekjjaegi Reading Club (Ages 6-7, Preschoolers)': This program for preschoolers focuses on "book play that fosters thought and imagination." Beyond just reading picture books, it stimulates the imagination and creativity of young children through various play activities based on the book's content, fostering a positive experience with reading. Reading activities utilizing the five senses—touch, sight, and hearing—help children naturally become familiar with books. For example, children are encouraged to immerse themselves in the world of the book by creating animals from the picture book or role-playing to express characters' emotions. This is expected to positively impact emotional stability and social development, crucial developmental tasks during early childhood.
'Chaekbarigi Reading Club (Elementary 1st-2nd Grade)': The 'Chaekbarigi Reading Club' for lower elementary school children focuses on experiencing the world and values within picture books. Children at this age begin to develop abstract thinking, so through picture books, they can explore various themes and values, broadening their understanding of the world. The program will consist of diverse post-reading activities such as meeting picture book authors, discussions using picture books, and drawing based on messages from the books. Through these activities, children can develop critical thinking skills and learn to freely express their thoughts and feelings. Furthermore, encountering various picture books will foster literary sensibility and deepen their reading experience.
'Chaekbaragi Reading Club (Elementary 3rd-4th Grade)': The 'Chaekbaragi Reading Club' for middle elementary school children will be operated around integrated reading activities such as writing, speaking, and making. Children of this age, with improved reading abilities, are more active in organizing and expressing their thoughts. Therefore, this program provides opportunities to organize and present their thoughts in writing after reading a book, focusing on improving overall language skills beyond just reading comprehension. For example, through activities like writing letters to book characters, keeping reading journals, debating specific topics, and creative activities based on book content, children can experience applying and expanding knowledge gained through reading into their real lives. These integrated activities will strengthen children's self-directed learning abilities and sustain their interest in learning.
Dongdaejeon Library Contributes to Revitalizing Local Reading Culture
Byeon Ok-jin, the Director of Dongdaejeon Library, stated, "Through these reading club activities, we hope that children will experience the joy of reading and develop healthy reading habits where their minds and bodies grow together through reading." Dongdaejeon Library plans to actively support the growth of children, who are the leaders of the future generation, into well-balanced individuals, not only intellectually but also emotionally and socially, through these reading club programs.
