WASHINGTON D.C. – Following President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that the conflict in the Middle East would end “very quickly,” U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Tuesday that the United States is launching its most aggressive wave of airstrikes to date against Iranian targets.
During a joint briefing at the Pentagon alongside General Dan Kane, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hegseth declared that the tenth day of Operation "Epic Fury" would mark a decisive turning point. "Today will be the most intense day of the campaign yet," Hegseth stated. "Iran is isolated and suffering a crushing defeat. We are deploying the largest assembly of fighters and bombers to ensure total air superiority."
Strategic Objectives and Degradation of Iranian Power
The Pentagon outlined four primary objectives for the ongoing military operation:
-Destruction of Iran’s ballistic missile stockpiles and launch platforms.
-Elimination of the defense industrial base and missile manufacturing capabilities.
-Neutralization of the Iranian Navy.
-Permanent blockage of Iran’s path to nuclear weapons.
According to Hegseth, the Iranian military has already been significantly hollowed out. He claimed that ballistic missile attacks from Tehran have plummeted by 90%, while suicide drone deployments have dropped by 83% compared to the start of the conflict. Furthermore, over 50 Iranian vessels have reportedly been neutralized in the past ten days.
General Kane added that Iran’s sophisticated surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems are no longer a "relevant variable," allowing U.S. aircraft to penetrate deep into Iranian territory with minimal interference.
A "Limited" Conflict, Not a Forever War
Addressing concerns over regional escalation, Hegseth pushed back against media narratives of a "widening war." He characterized the campaign as a high-intensity but geographically limited operation. "This is not an endless war," he emphasized. "We will continue until the enemy is decisively defeated, but we are operating on our own timeline to ensure this remains a swift victory."
Regarding the humanitarian impact, Hegseth insisted the U.S. is taking unprecedented measures to avoid civilian casualties, contrasting U.S. tactics with Iran’s alleged use of "human shields" by placing rocket launchers near schools and hospitals.
Reality on the Ground in Tehran
Despite these assurances, reports from Tehran describe a harrowing scene. Residents reported to the Associated Press that the latest strikes were the loudest and most destructive since the outbreak of hostilities. Massive power outages have been reported across the capital, and tens of thousands of civilians are reportedly fleeing toward rural provinces.
When questioned about reports regarding the health or status of Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, Hegseth declined to comment. He also maintained a nuanced stance on Israel's recent strikes on Iranian fuel depots, calling Israel a "strong partner" while acknowledging that the two allies "sometimes pursue different tactical objectives."
