Holds policy seminar on fostering local doctors… attended by medical schools, medical institutions, etc.

Chungnam Province and local medical circles and other related organizations have put their heads together for the stable implementation of the local doctor system.

On the 6th, the province held the "Local Doctor Training Cooperation Policy Seminar" at Ramada Encore by Wyndham Cheonan, with some 60 officials in attendance, including from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Education, Daejeon and Chungnam medical schools, university hospitals, and public health and medical institutions.

This forum was prepared to connect medical school education with local medical sites in preparation for the local doctor system, which will be implemented starting in 2027, and to seek systematic support measures ranging from the education of selected students to service at medical institutions and settlement in the region.

The forum began with a presentation on the establishment of a Chungnam-style, region-complete healthcare system and the local doctor system, followed by a keynote presentation, designated discussions, and a general discussion.

First, in the keynote presentation, Professor Yoon Bo-young of Inje University College of Medicine presented policy directions based on domestic cases, examining the achievements and success conditions of region-based medical education under the theme "Doctors educated in the region stay in the region."

In the subsequent designated discussion, medical schools and local medical institution officials participated to discuss education, practical training, and institutional support measures for students admitted through the local doctor selection screening.

Along with this, they shared the preparation status of medical schools' curriculum operations and the linkage conditions for clinical training at local medical institutions, and broadly reviewed the curriculum and support measures demanded by local medical sites.

Based on the opinions discussed in this seminar, the province plans to strengthen cooperation between medical schools and medical institutions, and materialize education and practical training linkage plans so that students selected as local doctors can fully experience local medical sites.

In addition, in line with the designation of the local doctor support center, the province plans to establish a step-by-step support system ranging from education to service and settlement, and build a cooperative foundation necessary for the implementation of the local doctor system in 2027.

Kwon Min-sik, head of the provincial Health Policy Division, said, "For the successful settlement of the local doctor system, close cooperation among related organizations is important, spanning not only student selection but also education, training, and service. We will establish an effective support system so that medical personnel who grow up in the region can stably settle in the local community and residents can receive the medical services they need."
