Soaring Summer Temperatures Prompt Early Launch of Cooling Hygiene Products in South Korea

Anticipating a longer and hotter summer than usual, as predicted by meteorological agencies, South Korea's hygiene product industry is proactively launching summer-focused products earlier than ever to capture the seasonal market. This trend highlights the growing impact of climate change on business strategies, with summer-specific items appearing on shelves as early as spring.

According to industry insiders on April 19th, the increasingly early onset of summer and rising temperatures are naturally pushing forward the release dates of seasonal products. A prime example is the introduction of summer-specific diapers designed for maximum coolness and breathability.

Yuhan-Kimberly, a leading hygiene product manufacturer, first introduced its summer-oriented diapers in May 2015, based on consumer big data analysis indicating a demand for such products tailored for the hot and humid summer months. This year, the company launched its new Huggies Summer Diapers in March, two months earlier than its initial foray into the summer diaper market a decade ago.

A Yuhan-Kimberly representative stated that this adjusted launch schedule reflects considerations of the changing climate patterns.

The Korea Meteorological Administration's (KMA) 2025 summer climate forecast indicates a 60% probability of higher-than-average temperatures across the peninsula. Last year was recorded as the hottest since 1973, with the number of tropical nights being three times the average. Some experts even predict that summer-like heat could persist from April to November. The extended summer season prompted the KMA to initiate discussions last year regarding the readjustment of seasonal lengths.

In 2024, Yuhan-Kimberly also launched products like the 'Huggies Naturemade Summer Diaper' in March. The company's summer diaper sales saw a 20% increase compared to the previous year, maintaining an average growth rate of over 20% in the past three years.

Kleenex Korea's baby care brand, Bosomi, also released its 'Bosomi Action Fit Summer Pants Diaper' in March this year. Last year, the company conducted pre-orders for its summer diapers in March as well.

A representative from Kleenex Korea explained, "Last year, we conducted pre-orders to gain an early advantage in the market. This year, we determined that April is the appropriate launch timing."

Kleenex Korea's diaper products experienced a sales increase following a comprehensive renewal in the previous year, which included design changes and quality improvements. Buoyed by this upward trend, the company anticipates even greater sales growth for its summer diaper line this year.

Beyond diapers, companies are competitively expanding their lineups of various cooling products.

Kleenex Korea recently launched three new types of cooling towels. These products build upon the strengths of the 'Peppermint Cooling Deo Tissue' released in July of the previous year, offering an immediate temperature reduction of approximately 9°C upon contact with the skin.

"We plan to strengthen our cooling product lineup, which is directly relevant to daily life," stated a Kleenex Korea official. "We also have plans to launch more cooling products in other categories."

Yuhan-Kimberly has also announced a significant expansion of its summer-focused sanitary pad lineup, launching the 'White Stay Cool Sanitary Pads' on April 4th.

This move follows the successful introduction of the Good Feeling Summer Edition last year. During the peak summer month of June, the Good Feeling overnight wearable pads accounted for 15% of the total sales of the overnight line, demonstrating strong consumer demand for cooling feminine hygiene products.

The 'Kleenex Cooling Wet Wipes,' which provide a temporary -6°C cooling effect on the skin, also experienced a remarkable 2.5-fold increase in sales in July of the previous year compared to the same period in 2023.

Climate Change Fuels Demand for Cooling Products

The early and aggressive push into the summer market by hygiene product companies underscores the tangible impact of climate change on consumer behavior and business strategies. As summers become longer, hotter, and more humid, consumers are increasingly seeking out products that offer relief from the heat. This shift in demand is forcing manufacturers to adapt their product development cycles and launch timelines to meet these evolving needs.

The meteorological data from the KMA and expert forecasts paint a clear picture of increasingly intense summer conditions in South Korea. The record-breaking heat of last year, coupled with predictions of a similarly hot summer in 2025, has created a strong incentive for consumers to purchase cooling products early in the season.

Global Trends in Cooling Product Innovation

The trend of launching summer-specific hygiene and personal care products earlier is not unique to South Korea. Globally, companies are recognizing the impact of rising temperatures and are innovating to provide consumers with relief from the heat. This includes advancements in material science to enhance breathability and cooling properties in diapers, the development of cooling fibers for towels and apparel, and the incorporation of cooling agents in wipes and feminine hygiene products.

For instance, in other parts of the world, we are seeing:

Advanced Diaper Technology: Companies are using materials with enhanced airflow and moisture-wicking capabilities, sometimes incorporating cooling gels or breathable back sheets designed for hot climates. Research into biodegradable and sustainable materials that still offer cooling properties is also gaining traction.
Cooling Textiles: The market for cooling towels and apparel is expanding, with innovations in fabrics that utilize evaporative cooling, phase change materials, or specialized weaves to dissipate heat.
Cooling Personal Care: Beyond wipes, companies are developing cooling sunscreens, body washes, and lotions that provide a refreshing sensation upon application. The use of natural cooling ingredients like menthol and peppermint, as seen in Kleenex's products, is a common strategy.
Focus on Sustainability: As climate change concerns grow, there is also an increasing emphasis on developing these cooling products in an environmentally responsible manner, using sustainable materials and reducing the carbon footprint of manufacturing processes.

Market Competition and Future Outlook

The proactive strategies of Yuhan-Kimberly and Kleenex Korea highlight the intense competition within the South Korean hygiene product market to capture the burgeoning demand for summer-specific items. The early launches and expansion of cooling product lines are aimed at gaining a competitive edge and building brand loyalty among consumers seeking relief from the heat.

As climate change continues to influence weather patterns globally, the trend of earlier and more innovative cooling product launches is likely to persist and expand. Companies that can effectively anticipate consumer needs and develop high-quality, sustainable cooling solutions will be well-positioned for success in this evolving market. The focus on data-driven insights, as demonstrated by Yuhan-Kimberly's use of consumer big data, will be crucial for understanding and responding to the dynamic demands of the climate-conscious consumer.

The coming summer in South Korea will not only test the resilience of its population to higher temperatures but also the agility and innovation of its industries in providing solutions that enhance comfort and well-being in a warmer world. The early moves by hygiene product manufacturers signal a broader trend of businesses adapting to the realities of a changing climate and the opportunities it presents for new products and market strategies.
