Israel Assassinates Hezbollah's Second-in-Command in Targeted Beirut Airstrike

Beirut, Lebanon — Escalating regional tensions, Israel confirmed it carried out a precision airstrike on an apartment in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Sunday, eliminating Haytham Ali Tabatabai, 57, the de facto second-in-command and Chief of Staff of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. The targeted strike, the first in the Lebanese capital since June, occurred around 2:50 p.m. local time in the densely populated Dahiyeh district, a known Hezbollah stronghold.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the attack resulted in five fatalities and 28 injuries, with victims including both Hezbollah operatives and civilians. Images from the scene showed a residential building severely damaged, with multiple floors destroyed and debris scattered across the street.

IDF Confirms Elimination of Key Commander

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) took responsibility for the operation, asserting they had "eliminated the terrorist Haytham Ali Tabatabai, Hezbollah’s Chief of Staff." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the strike was ordered based on recommendations from the Defense Minister and the IDF Chief of Staff.

Netanyahu later addressed his cabinet, stating, "We continue the attack against terrorism on several fronts," and vowed to "take every necessary measure to prevent Hezbollah from re-establishing its ability to threaten us." The IDF has been conducting near-daily strikes in Lebanon since a November ceasefire, accusing Hezbollah of violating the agreement by not withdrawing its forces and actively smuggling and rearming.

Tabatabai, a veteran commander who joined Hezbollah in the 1980s, was a high-value target. The United States designated him a terrorist in 2016 and offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture or death. According to the IDF, he previously commanded the elite Radwan Force and held various senior positions, including overseeing operations in Syria. He reportedly played a crucial role in managing combat activity during the IDF's "Operation Northern Arrows" last year and was instrumental in leading the organization's reconstruction after the ceasefire.

Hezbollah Cries 'Red Line' Violation

The attack immediately drew a furious response from Hezbollah and Lebanese authorities. Mahmoud Qamati, a Hezbollah official visiting the site of the bombing, told reporters that the targeting of a "key figure in the resistance" clearly "crosses a new red line," suggesting a potential for retaliation.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun issued a strong condemnation, stating that Israel "disregards repeated demands to cease its attacks on Lebanon and rejects all efforts and plans to restore stability in the region." The strike underscores the deeply fragile nature of the current ceasefire and raises serious concerns about a wider escalation of conflict in the region.

This latest operation marks a significant blow to Hezbollah's command structure, which has seen much of its senior leadership eliminated by Israeli strikes over the past year. However, it also signifies an aggressive Israeli posture in targeting high-ranking figures deep within the Lebanese capital, increasing the risk of an all-out war. The move is a clear signal from Jerusalem that it will continue to pursue Hezbollah's military leadership regardless of the diplomatic and humanitarian fallout. The international community is now left to watch closely, as the prospect of a full-scale conflict looms large following this decisive and deadly escalation.
