Seoul, South Korea – Cyworld, the once-dominant social networking platform in South Korea, is poised to make a comeback in 2025. The company behind the revival, Cycomm, announced on Tuesday that it had acquired the rights and assets of the original Cyworld from CyworldZ.
Cyworld, which peaked in popularity in the 2000s with over 32 million users, was known for its customizable mini-homepage feature, allowing users to create personalized online spaces. The platform also introduced the concept of "ilchon," or "one-degree connections," facilitating social interactions among users. However, Cyworld's inability to adapt to the rise of mobile technology led to its decline, and the service was eventually shut down in 2019.
Cycomm plans to leverage Cyworld's strong brand recognition and vast user data to create a new community platform that caters to the evolving needs of today's internet users. The company aims to provide users with a more personalized and private social experience, emphasizing smaller group interactions and reducing the pressure to constantly share personal information.
"We envision a revival of Cyworld's original motto, 'People who are good to each other,'" said a spokesperson for Cycomm. "We want to create a platform where users can connect with their close friends and communities in a more meaningful way."
