Taipei's Envoy Hosts Gastronomic Tour in Paraguay

Asunción, Paraguay – The "Tour Internacional Culinario Gourmet de Taiwán" (Taiwan International Culinary Gourmet Tour) successfully took place last Tuesday at Shangri-La, an iconic venue in Asunción, Paraguay. The event captivated attendees as renowned Taiwanese chefs Kuo-chih Wen and Jui-chang Chen personally demonstrated and showcased traditional Taiwanese dishes. The occasion was graced by the presence of key figures from various sectors, including business leaders, medical professionals, and diplomats from both nations.

Beyond Cultural Exchange: A Platform for Bilateral Cooperation

In an interview with local media outlet GEN, José Chih-Cheng Han, Taiwan's Ambassador to Paraguay, emphasized that this event was more than just a cultural exchange; it represented an important platform for cooperation between the two countries. He highlighted that the Taiwanese dishes were prepared primarily using Paraguayan agricultural and livestock products. This, he explained, was a meaningful endeavor to promote the excellence of Paraguayan ingredients both domestically and internationally, while also expanding economic exchanges between the two nations.

Ambassador Han specifically underscored the increasing imports of Paraguayan beef into Taiwan and its high popularity there, adding, "We are making the best Taiwanese food with Paraguay's finest agricultural products." This statement reinforces Paraguay's reputation as a strong exporter of agricultural and livestock products.

Global Culinary Roadshow by World-Class Taiwanese Chefs

Ambassador Han noted that the careers and reputations of chefs Kuo-chih Wen and Jui-chang Chen, who were invited to this event, are world-class. However, he added that they are not the only ones, revealing that the Taiwanese government mobilizes world-renowned gourmands annually to actively promote Taiwanese culinary culture through gastronomic tours spanning the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Such government-level efforts significantly contribute to Taiwanese cuisine becoming more widely known and recognized globally.

A total of five dishes were presented at the event, with some reinterpreted to suit the local Paraguayan palate. One dish that particularly garnered attention was "Dongpo Rou." Dongpo Rou is a pork dish named after Su Dongpo, a famous writer, poet, and gourmet from China's Song Dynasty. It is characterized by its tender texture and rich flavor, achieved through long, slow braising. Taiwanese Dongpo Rou is distinctive for being stewed in soy sauce, sugar, and rice wine, giving it a sweet and savory taste. The use of fresh Paraguayan pork was noted to have further enhanced its flavor.

The Importance of Gastronomy Diplomacy

This Taiwanese culinary tour transcends a mere food showcase. It can be seen as a significant example of Gastronomy Diplomacy. Gastronomy diplomacy involves using a country's food culture to convey its history, traditions, and values, contributing to international understanding and improved relations. Through this form of diplomacy, Taiwan aims to strengthen its ties with Paraguay, reinforce cultural bonds, and ultimately broaden the scope of economic cooperation.

Indeed, Taiwan has maintained close relations with Latin American countries for a long time, and Paraguay is one of the few nations with which Taiwan maintains official diplomatic ties. In this context, cultural exchange events like the culinary tour have a profound impact in fostering a friendly atmosphere between the two countries and invigorating people-to-people exchanges. The utilization of excellent Paraguayan agricultural products in Taiwanese cuisine could also positively affect Paraguay's agricultural sector and offer Taiwanese consumers an opportunity to experience high-quality Paraguayan ingredients.

Impact on Paraguay's Economy and Culture

The event was widely reported by local Paraguayan media and on social media, increasing interest in Taiwanese food culture. This could potentially lead to an increase in Taiwanese tourists visiting Paraguay in the long term. Furthermore, exchanges between Paraguayan and Taiwanese chefs could provide new inspiration and techniques to the Paraguayan culinary industry, thereby contributing to the development of Paraguay's gastronomic culture.

This event provides significant implications, demonstrating that Taiwan and Paraguay are aiming for deep cultural and economic exchanges that go beyond mere diplomatic relations. By fostering mutual understanding and respect through the universal language of food, cooperation between the two countries is expected to develop in more diverse ways.
