Calls Mount for Swift Launch of "Unification Church Special Counsel" to Ensure Fair Investigation of All Parties

SEOUL — Amid intensifying public scrutiny over the alleged ties between the Unification Church and the political sphere, the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has officially accepted the proposal for a Special Counsel investigation. This marks a significant shift in the political landscape as both the ruling and opposition parties appear to find common ground on the necessity of a transparent inquiry into allegations of illicit financial ties and political interference.

A Sudden Shift in the Political Tide

The DPK’s decision follows months of hesitation. Party leadership, including Representative Jung Chung-rae and Floor Leader Kim Byung-ki, had previously dismissed the special counsel demand as a "diversionary tactic." However, faced with overwhelming public support for an independent probe—including 67% of the DPK’s own supporters—the party has pivoted to a stance of total cooperation. "There is no reason not to accept it," stated Chairman Jung, signaling a commitment to uncovering the truth.

The controversy stems from allegations that the Unification Church exerted undue influence during the 2022 presidential election through systematic lobbying and financial support. Testimonies from high-ranking former officials within the church, including former World Headquarters Director Yun Young-ho, have reportedly implicated dozens of politicians from across the aisle, accusing them of receiving illicit funds.

Framework for an Independent Probe

The People Power Party (PPP) and the Reform Party have already laid the groundwork for the legislative framework. In a recent meeting between PPP Floor Leader Song Eon-seok and Reform Party Floor Leader Chun Ha-ram, the two sides agreed to narrow the scope of the investigation specifically to the "Unification Church and the political circles." Crucially, to ensure impartiality, the parties agreed that the power to recommend the Special Counsel should be delegated to a neutral third party: the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

While the parties initially sparred over whether to include a previous special counsel team’s alleged failure to investigate DPK-linked leads, they have agreed to prioritize the current allegations to ensure the bill passes without unnecessary delays.

The Imperative of Neutrality

The success of this special counsel hinges on its perceived fairness. As the Unification Church has become synonymous with lobbying and collusion, the public's trust in standard police and prosecutorial investigations has waned, with many fearing that political pressure might stifle the search for truth.

The forthcoming special counsel must be led by a figure of unquestionable political neutrality, capable of resisting external influence. Both the ruling and opposition parties are now under immense pressure to finalize the details of the bill. Any attempt to stall the process through partisan bickering over minor technicalities is likely to face a severe public backlash.

With the 2022 election interference allegations casting a long shadow over the integrity of the nation’s democratic processes, this investigation is seen as a vital step in purging "religion-based lobbying" from the halls of power. The mission is clear: to ensure that no one is above the law and that the full extent of the collusion is brought to light.
