Asunción Technical School, Classroom Ceiling Collapses…Parents Raise Safety Concerns

A portion of a classroom ceiling collapsed at the Carlos Antonio López Technical and Vocational School in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. The incident was discovered on Monday, September 1, 2025, when the school staff assessed the situation before the start of classes. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

The collapse occurred in a first-year classroom for the automotive department. School officials speculate that water accumulated in the classroom above leaked, causing the plaster ceiling to fall. Principal Lucía Bogado explained, "The incident happened over the weekend, so no students or staff members were hurt."

However, parents have expressed deep concern and anger over the incident. In a statement, parents from the affected class said, "It is a huge relief that not a single student was injured," but also stressed, "This is a problem beyond what we can resolve on our own." They stated that they had been carrying out their own classroom repairs since the beginning of the semester, including electrical wiring, windows, and furniture replacement, but were unable to address the building's structural issues.

Furthermore, parents pointed out that they had already discovered cracks in the ceiling and raised the issue with the school before the collapse, but no proper action was taken. One parent said, "We found cracks in the ceiling on Friday and informed the school, so we were shocked to see it had collapsed on Monday."

After the incident, the school temporarily moved the students from the affected class to another classroom for their lessons. However, parents are concerned that the alternative classroom is not suitable for accommodating around 30 students. A parent representative stated definitively, "We cannot send our children back to the collapsed classroom. We want a solution where safety is guaranteed."

This incident has brought the issue of poor infrastructure in many schools across Asunción back into the public eye. Parents are strongly demanding that this opportunity be used to conduct a comprehensive structural safety inspection of the entire school building, not just the collapsed classroom, and to establish specific measures to prevent future occurrences.

The educational authorities in Asunción have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but with growing public outcry and media attention, they are expected to take action on school safety issues soon. Experts point out the urgent need for regular safety inspections of aging buildings and financial support, emphasizing that creating an educational environment that prioritizes student safety is essential.
