The South Korean under-23 men's national football team launched their campaign for an unprecedented fourth consecutive Asian Games gold medal with a dominant 4-1 victory over Qatar.

Led by head coach Lee Min-sung, South Korea secured the comfortable win on September 15 at the Mizuho Park Rugby Stadium in Nagoya, Japan, during their opening Group D match of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The standout performance came from European-based winger Um Ji-sung (Swansea City), who netted a brilliant hat-trick to dismantle the Qatari defense.

The outcome of the match was effectively decided in the first 45 minutes, thanks to Um's offensive masterclass.

First Goal (7th minute): Center-back Kim Ji-soo (Brentford) launched a long ball from the back. Um Ji-sung expertly tracked it down on the left flank, exploited the space behind the defensive line, drove into the penalty area, and fired a sharp left-footed shot into the net.

Second-Half Action and Securing the Win

South Korea maintained relentless offensive pressure in the second half.

After several near-misses by Bae Jun-ho (Stoke City), Yang Hyun-jun (Celtic), and Kim Myung-jun (Genk), Kim Myung-jun finally found the back of the net in the 21st minute of the second half. He converted a clean pass from Yang Hyun-jun to extend South Korea's lead to 4-0.

With the victory virtually assured, Coach Lee Min-sung utilized his bench strategically in the 27th minute, substituting out Kim Myung-jun, Bae Jun-ho, and Lee Seung-won for fresh legs: Yang Min-hyeok (Westerlo), Lee Hyun-ju (Arouca), and Kang Sang-yoon (Jeonbuk).

Qatar managed to pull a goal back in the 40th minute of the second half when Mirwan Hassan scored from a set-piece situation. Despite a brief late surge from the Qatari side, the Korean defense held firm to preserve the 4-1 scoreline.

Tactical Lineup and Broader Context

South Korea lined up in an aggressive formation, deploying Kim Myung-jun as the central striker, supported by Um Ji-sung, Bae Jun-ho, and Yang Hyun-jun in the attacking midfield. Captain Lee Ki-hyuk and Lee Seung-won anchored the center of the pitch, while the defensive four consisted of Kim Ji-soo, Shin Min-ha (Gangwon), Choi Seok-hyun (Ulsan), and Bae Hyun-seo (Gyeongnam). Qatar, utilizing a younger squad born from 2005 onward to prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, struggled from the outset against South Korea's high-tempo pressing and rapid transition plays.
