Andong City Launches "Happy Healing Childbirth Class" to Support Expectant Mothers

Andong, South Korea – Andong City is taking proactive steps to support its registered pregnant residents by offering a comprehensive "Happy Healing Childbirth Class." This initiative aims to equip expectant mothers with essential knowledge about pregnancy and childbirth while fostering their emotional and physical well-being during this transformative period.

The program, divided into two cohorts spanning May and June, will consist of six two-hour sessions held at the Health Education Room within the Andong City Public Health Center's Community Health Support Center. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to cover a wide array of topics crucial for a healthy pregnancy and the initial stages of parenthood.

One of the unique elements of the class is a healing prenatal session focused on creating attachment dolls. These dolls serve as a tangible way for expectant mothers to bond with their unborn babies, fostering early emotional connection and potentially reducing anxiety associated with pregnancy. Studies suggest that engaging in creative activities like doll-making during pregnancy can promote relaxation and a sense of well-being.

Recognizing the holistic approach to maternal care in Korean tradition, the class will also include education on Korean medicine-based prenatal and postpartum care and health maintenance practices (Yangsaeng). Traditional Korean medicine emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance and harmony in the body, offering unique insights into managing pregnancy discomforts and promoting recovery after childbirth. This may include dietary recommendations, gentle exercises, and stress management techniques rooted in Korean medical principles.

Preparing for the birthing process is another key component of the curriculum, with sessions dedicated to healthy childbirth methods. Participants will learn about various labor and delivery techniques, potentially including breathing exercises, relaxation methods, and optimal birthing positions. Understanding the different stages of labor and available options can empower expectant mothers to approach childbirth with greater confidence and reduce fear.

The importance of nurturing the newborn is addressed through breastfeeding and infant massage education. Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for both mother and baby, and the class will likely cover techniques for successful latch, positioning, and milk supply. Infant massage has been shown to promote bonding, improve digestion, enhance sleep patterns, and even stimulate the release of oxytocin in both parent and baby, further supporting the breastfeeding relationship.

Finally, the curriculum includes practical guidance on baby bathing methods. This session will likely cover safe handling techniques, water temperature regulation, and tips for making bath time a calming and enjoyable experience for both parent and infant. Some modern approaches, like swaddle bathing, which mimics the security of the womb, may also be discussed.

This initiative by Andong City underscores the growing recognition of the multifaceted needs of expectant parents. Prenatal education classes, in general, offer numerous benefits, including better health outcomes, stronger partner connections, opportunities to build a support network with other expecting families, improved communication with healthcare providers, and a more satisfying birth experience. Studies have also indicated that participation in such classes can lead to higher rates of vaginal births and a lower likelihood of preterm births.

Andong City is committed to making these resources accessible to its pregnant residents. Interested individuals can apply by contacting the Community Health Team at the Andong City Public Health Center or by visiting the childcare supplies rental room at the Community Health Support Center directly.

This "Happy Healing Childbirth Class" is part of a broader range of maternal and child health initiatives implemented by Andong City to promote the well-being of mothers and infants and alleviate financial burdens. These ongoing efforts include the provision of nutritional supplements for pregnant women and infants, fetal anomaly screening test coupons, maternal and newborn health care support services, diaper and formula assistance for low-income families, and a free childcare supplies rental program.

Mayor Kwon Ki-chang emphasized the significance of this new program, stating, "I hope this childbirth class will be a valuable time for expectant parents to prepare for healthy childbirth and childcare. We will continue to do our best to create a healthy childbirth environment with systematic and highly professional programs."

Andong City's commitment to providing comprehensive support for expectant mothers reflects a broader trend in South Korea towards strengthening maternal and child health. National policies include providing standardized health record books, folic acid and iron supplements, financial assistance for pregnancy and childbirth medical expenses, and robust vaccination programs. By offering localized and specialized programs like the "Happy Healing Childbirth Class," Andong City is further contributing to the well-being of its community and fostering a supportive environment for new families.
