'Iron Wall' Kim Min-jae Achieves Historic Feat as First Korean to Simultaneously Conquer Serie A and Bundesliga

"Kim Min-jae has done it!" A monumental moment etched in the history of Korean football has arrived. 'Iron Wall Defender' Kim Min-jae (29, Bayern Munich) has finally achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first Korean player to lift both the Italian Serie A and German Bundesliga championship trophies.

Bayern Munich clinched their record-extending 34th Bundesliga title on May 5th (local time) after their rival Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 with Freiburg in the 32nd round of the 2024-25 season, making the remaining match results irrelevant. Kim Min-jae played a pivotal role as a key defender for Munich, contributing significantly to their triumph.

Kim Min-jae started all 27 league matches this season, leading Bayern's formidable defense. His exceptional defensive prowess and consistent performance were crucial in the team achieving the fewest goals conceded in the league. Notably, even amidst injuries to fellow defenders throughout the season, Kim Min-jae maintained an unwavering presence, steadfastly guarding the team's defensive line. It is no exaggeration to say that he single-handedly carried Bayern's defense during the prolonged absences of key players like Dayot Upamecano, Hiroki Ito, and Alphonso Davies.

This is a historic record that even Cha Bum-kun, a living legend of Korean football, could not achieve. Cha Bum-kun, during his playing days with Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen, won the UEFA Cup, leaving a significant mark on European football history, but he never lifted the Bundesliga title. Son Heung-min also played for Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen but did not win the Bundesliga. Kim Min-jae has now accomplished this great feat that even these prominent predecessors could not, writing a new chapter in Korean football history.

This is not Kim Min-jae's first European league title. He previously led SSC Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years in the 2022-23 season, establishing his reputation as a 'monster defender' on the European stage. At that time, Kim Min-jae was recognized as the best defender in Serie A based on his overwhelming physicality and excellent defensive intelligence, and he remains an unforgettable hero to Napoli fans.

After conquering the Italian league, Kim Min-jae received a call from one of Europe's top clubs, Bayern Munich, after just one season. And within two seasons of his transfer, he reached the summit of the German Bundesliga, once again proving his worth. Despite facing challenges in securing a regular starting position in the latter half of last season, he became a key player under the new manager Vincent Kompany this season, earning his trust and ultimately sharing the glory of the championship.

Remarkably, Kim Min-jae has been playing with an Achilles tendon injury for as long as seven months, demonstrating immense dedication to his team. In an interview with the German media outlet 'TZ', he revealed, "The Achilles tendon problem still remains. But I am gritting my teeth and bearing it." This revelation deeply moved the fans. His sacrifice and fighting spirit for the team have finally been rewarded with the precious Bundesliga title.

While Kim Min-jae has received just reward for his dedication with Bayern's victory, transfer rumors continue to circulate this summer. Reports suggest that English Premier League clubs like Newcastle United and Manchester United are interested in signing him. Having conquered the top leagues in both Italy and Germany, it would not be surprising if Kim Min-jae moves to another major league.

However, Kim Min-jae himself has quelled these rumors by expressing his strong affection for his current club, stating, "I want to stay at Bayern and continue to compete." He has indicated his satisfaction with the current team and his desire to achieve more success as a Bayern Munich player.

Thus, Kim Min-jae is recorded as the first Korean player in history to have won both the Serie A and the Bundesliga, achieving the incredible feat of winning two major league titles in just three seasons, something many players never experience in their entire careers. This may be a somewhat bittersweet yet respectable moment for Son Heung-min, who has played for Tottenham Hotspur for over 10 years without lifting a single trophy.

Like UEFA Cup winner Cha Bum-kun and Premier League and UEFA Champions League winner Park Ji-sung, Kim Min-jae will be forever remembered as a shining name in Korean football history. His continuous challenges, dedication, and outstanding skills will serve as a great example for many younger players in the future and are expected to contribute significantly to raising the status of Korean football. Now, fans will eagerly anticipate and support the future endeavors of 'Iron Wall' Kim Min-jae and the new history he will write.
