Power Bank Overheats on Jeju-Bound Flight with 243 Passengers Aboard, Leaving Woman in Her 50s Burned

A passenger suffered burns after a portable power bank overheated on a Jeju-bound flight departing from Hong Kong.

According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire and Safety Headquarters on the 25th, at approximately 6:22 AM today, a report was received that smoke and a passenger burn occurred due to an overheating power bank inside an aircraft arriving from Hong Kong that was scheduled to land at Jeju International Airport.

At the time, the aircraft was carrying 236 passengers and 7 crew members.

The incident occurred when smoke began emitting from a power bank stored in a bag beneath a passenger seat, prompting the passenger to retrieve it.

As a result, a Chinese female passenger in her 50s sustained burns to her left thumb.

The flight crew immediately placed the power bank into a thermal containment bag—a specialized piece of equipment for handling in-flight battery fires—and submerged it in water.

Emergency authorities dispatched upon receiving the report confirmed at around 6:52 AM that there was no further risk of fire inside the cabin and provided first aid to the injured passenger.
