Recent research has shown that wearing socks that have been worn all day to bed can be harmful to your health.
According to the Cleveland Sleep Clinic in the United States, wearing socks to bed can help dilate blood vessels and promote blood flow, which helps maintain body temperature at an optimal level. However, it has been pointed out that sleeping with socks that have been worn all day is not hygienic.
A recent survey conducted by a British mattress company of 1,130 Reddit users found that about 18% of them sleep with socks on. Only 30% of them were found to be wearing clean socks.
In particular, an analysis of the microbial content of eight pairs of socks worn throughout the day revealed 20 times more bacteria than in a toilet bowl. This is a more unsanitary level than a typical TV remote control. Fecal-related bacteria were also detected in 25% of the socks. The research team explained that such contamination is likely caused by environmental factors such as walking barefoot in the house or cockroach droppings.
Experts urged people to wash their bed sheets frequently for hygiene, wear clean socks to bed, and wear slippers at home to prevent contamination of socks.
They also said that wearing clean socks to bed is good for your health. The study found that people who wore socks fell asleep 7.5 minutes faster, slept 32 minutes longer, and woke up 7.5 times less often at night.
