Chinese President Xi Jinping today held talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is on an official visit to China, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This meeting is expected to be a new turning point in the relationship between the two countries, which marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year.

President Xi congratulated Prime Minister Wong on his second term and emphasized that the two countries have steadily developed their relationship over the past 35 years based on mutual understanding and respect. This has been assessed as a solid foundation for the stable and healthy development of bilateral relations.

35th Anniversary of Diplomatic Ties: A History of Mutual Development

Since establishing diplomatic relations on October 3, 1990, China and Singapore have fostered mutual development through substantive cooperation. Notably, bilateral cooperation has progressed in alignment with China's development priorities at each stage, yielding remarkable achievements. A prime example of this success is the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). Jointly developed starting in 1994, the Suzhou Industrial Park is a large-scale industrial zone built by integrating Singapore's advanced industrial and urban development expertise during the early stages of China's reform and opening-up. It has evolved into a comprehensive new city with residential, commercial, and educational facilities, significantly contributing to China's modernization and establishing itself as a successful model for inter-regional cooperation.

In addition to the Suzhou Industrial Park, the two countries have also undertaken successful cooperation projects in environmental and knowledge-based industries, such as the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city and the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City. These projects exemplify cooperation that combines the strengths of both nations to pursue sustainable development.

Looking Towards the Future from a Strategic Height

President Xi emphasized that both countries should learn from the experiences and wisdom gained during the development of their past relations, carry forward excellent traditions, and strive to ensure that the tree of China-Singapore friendship flourishes and bears rich fruits. He further stressed that both sides must firmly grasp the broad direction of bilateral friendship and continuously observe and develop China-Singapore relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective.

This visit marks Prime Minister Wong's first trip to China since assuming office. Prime Minister Wong became Singapore's fourth Prime Minister on May 15, commencing his role as a next-generation leader. Succeeding former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister Wong places great importance on relations with China, and this meeting is interpreted as a strong expression of his commitment to the continued development of bilateral ties.

Singapore, a key nation in Southeast Asia and an important member of ASEAN, plays a crucial role in regional economic integration discussions, including China's Belt and Road Initiative and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). Strategically located at the Strait of Malacca, Singapore serves as a vital hub for maritime trade and is closely linked to China's Maritime Silk Road strategy.

The meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong carries an important message for peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. Beyond economic cooperation, strengthening collaboration in various fields such as cultural exchange and people-to-people exchanges is expected to deepen bilateral relations, serving as an exemplary model for promoting mutual interests and contributing to regional stability amidst rapidly changing international circumstances. All eyes are now on what new horizons of cooperation the two countries will unlock.
