Singapore – Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has once again made headlines, this time for its stunning Gaia building, which has been recognized as one of the world's most beautiful campuses in 2024.
Following its ranking as a top 20 university in the QS World University Rankings in June, NTU continues to garner attention not only for its academic excellence but also for its architectural achievements on the global stage.
Named after Gaia, the ancient Greek goddess of Earth, the six-story, 468,000-square-foot Gaia building officially opened in May 2023, housing the Nanyang Business School. As the largest wooden structure in Asia, the building is a testament to sustainable architecture, constructed almost entirely from mass timber sourced from sustainably managed forests. Rather than relying on fans, Gaia incorporates solar shading fins into its facade to enhance ventilation.
The building's unique design has garnered recognition in architecture, sustainability, and innovation. In 2024, Architizer's A+Awards honored Gaia with a Jury Prize in the Sustainable Institutional Building category. The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Asia Pacific Awards also acknowledged the building's innovation and sustainability in 2022.
Beyond the campus, the firm, Serie Architects, has a diverse portfolio of architectural projects, including airports, museums, hotels, and restaurants.
