A Second Visit to Korea: A Memorable Mother-Daughter Encounter in Busan

"This is my second time visiting Korea."

Accompanied by her five-year-old daughter, a Singaporean woman of Indian descent recently traveled to Busan. True to certain traits often associated with Indian travelers, she ordered just a single dish while making a specific request: she asked for the chicken bulgogi to be prepared spicy for herself, but non-spicy for her daughter. While Indian nationals and people of Indian descent often share distinct cultural characteristics, this family proved to be no exception.

A substantial population of Indian descent resides in Singapore. At first, unaware of the history behind it, I found it rather puzzling. However, that presence stems from a unique history spanning over 200 years. Today, quite a few prominent figures of Indian descent live there. For these reasons and more, this mother and daughter are bound to remain unforgettable guests.
