Daejeon, South Korea – The Daejeon Museum of Art (DMA) is set to simultaneously launch its special exhibition, Whimsical Nature, and its permanent collection exhibition, DMA Collection Highlights 2025: Traces, on April 1st at the museum's Open Storage (155 Dunsan-daero, Daejeon).

The special exhibition, Whimsical Nature, offers a comprehensive look into the artistic journey of Daejeon-born artist Yoo Keun-young (b. 1948). Centered around his seminal works, <Cosmic Space> (1987) and <Whimsical Nature> (1998), the exhibition showcases key pieces spanning from his early career to the present day.

Yoo Keun-young has been a pivotal figure in the emergence and development of contemporary art in Daejeon since the 1970s. Throughout his career, he has maintained a deep connection with the local art scene while cultivating his own distinctive artistic language. His Whimsical Nature series, in particular, has evolved from early abstract patterns into a unique artistic style that blurs the lines between landscape and still life painting, presenting his own imaginative and vibrant vision of nature. The exhibition will feature 12 representative works from different periods of Yoo's career, providing a multifaceted understanding of his artistic world.

Accompanying this is the permanent exhibition, DMA Collection Highlights 2025: Traces, which explores the theme of "traces" through various mediums such as photography, prints, and drawings. The exhibition highlights the journey of these mediums, once not considered independent art forms, as they have evolved into established visual languages over time, offering a fresh perspective on their historical significance and artistic value.

Notably, this exhibition actively incorporates the spatial structure of the Open Storage, utilizing storage racks and artwork transport carts to create an organically connected environment between the artworks and the space itself. Furthermore, the exhibition will spotlight the expanded possibilities and fusion of mediums through the works of newly selected artists including Hwang Kyu-tae, Choi Won-jin, Hong Kyun, Lim Dong-sik, Lee Dong-hoon, Song Beom-soo, and Han Woon-sung.

Both exhibitions are free to the public. More detailed information can be found on the museum's website (www.daejeon.go.kr/dma).

Yoon Eui-hyang, Director of the Daejeon Museum of Art, stated, "We will continue to strive to enable citizens to enjoy art more intimately through diverse exhibitions based on our collection. We aim to strengthen the museum's public role, re-examine the value of our collection, and maintain continuous communication with the public."
