East Sea Coast Guard Stands Watch Over Dokdo During Chuseok Holiday

DONGHAE, South Korea—The Donghae Regional Coast Guard is maintaining its vigilant patrol and maritime sovereignty mission over Dokdo and the East Sea (Sea of Japan) even as the nation observes Chuseok, one of Korea's most important traditional holidays.

The Coast Guard’s commitment underscores the ongoing efforts to protect Korea's easternmost territory and ensure maritime safety. While most of the country is celebrating the harvest festival with family gatherings, personnel aboard the Coast Guard's Patrol Vessel 3016 are carrying out their duties in the waters surrounding Dokdo.

A statement from the 3016 Patrol Vessel commander, Jeong Hwan-ki, affirmed the unit's resolve: "Even during the Chuseok holiday, the Donghae Coast Guard is dedicated to protecting Dokdo, Ulleungdo, and the entire East Sea, doing our utmost to ensure the public can enjoy a peaceful and secure holiday."

The crew on the 3016 is conducting routine security, patrol, and emergency rescue operations. The East Sea Coast Guard has also intensified its efforts across its entire jurisdiction to prevent maritime accidents and ensure rapid response capabilities throughout the long holiday weekend.

This continuous presence in the East Sea highlights the South Korean government's firm stance on maintaining maritime sovereignty over Dokdo, a pair of islets that form a crucial part of the Republic of Korea's territory. The Coast Guard plays a vital role in upholding national jurisdiction and providing essential safety services in this strategically important area.
