KTO and Nexon Games Partner to Recreate Realistic Korean Scenery in Upcoming AAA Title ‘Woochi the Wayfarer’

The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has joined forces with major South Korean game developer Nexon Games to infuse authentic domestic aesthetics into the global gaming scene. On September 14, 2026, it was announced that both organizations officially signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) on September 11 at the KTO Seoul Center to collaborate on content development. Under this partnership, the KTO will supply approximately 70,000 high-resolution images and about 1,000 video clips—including specialized drone footage—to serve as foundational graphic and environmental design assets for Nexon Games’ highly anticipated title, Woochi the Wayfarer.

Woochi the Wayfarer, currently in development by Nexon Games’ LoreVault Studio, is a AAA single-player action-adventure game rooted in a unique "Joseon fantasy" setting. The game draws its primary creative inspiration from the classic Korean folkloric novel The Tale of Jeon Woo-chi (Jeon Woochi-jeon), chronicling the extraordinary journeys of a mythical Taoist wizard who casts spells and battles malevolent creatures. By leveraging the KTO’s massive repository of verified cultural and natural heritage assets, the development team aims to accurately capture the geographical texture, architectural nuances, and atmospheric beauty of historic South Korea.

A core significance of this agreement lies in the nature of the data provided. The assets belong to the "Top 100 AI and High-Value Data" portfolio designated by the South Korean government, curated and strictly managed through professional oversight. Private game developers typically encounter financial, logistical, and legal barriers when attempting to independently scout and document remote cultural relics, unique topography, and diverse natural landscapes from multi-angle aerial and ground perspectives. By bridging this gap, the KTO’s verified resources allow Nexon Games to bypass common distortions or generic depictions, faithfully translating real-world Korean environments into a virtual fantasy framework.

Beyond the initial development phase, the collaboration is structured to evolve into a multi-faceted global inbound tourism marketing campaign. Both organizations have agreed to evaluate joint promotional frameworks aligned with the game's official release timeline. As global users experience the intricate beauty of Korean nature and historical ruins directly through interactive gameplay, the initiative aims to spark cross-media cultural appreciation that naturally translates into real-world travel interest and actual visits to South Korea. Plans are currently under discussion to introduce and highlight the actual physical tourist locations that inspired the game's digital backgrounds once the title hits the global market.

Industry analysts view this partnership as a pioneering cross-industry convergence model that expands the utility boundaries of public sector data. Kim Young-mi, Head of the Tourism AI Innovation Division at the KTO, emphasized that the organization's high-value data extends far beyond standard artificial intelligence training, serving as an essential catalyst for inter-industry collaboration. She noted her strong expectation that the scenic landscapes rendered in Woochi the Wayfarer will act as an organic catalyst for inbound tourism, demonstrating how modern digital entertainment can powerfully promote national heritage. Echoing this sentiment, Kang In-soo, Head of the Corporate Management Division at Nexon Games, stated that integrating the KTO's rich archival assets will significantly elevate the depth, immersion, and authenticity of the game's virtual world-building. Through such strategic alignments, both entities hope to continuously discover innovative ways to showcase the multifaceted charms of South Korea to domestic and international audiences alike.
