Jakarta - In a significant move to deepen bilateral relations, Puan Maharani, Speaker of the Indonesian People's Representative Council (Parliament), met with To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, in Jakarta today. The discussions centered on reviewing and bolstering the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two Southeast Asian nations.
Maharani emphasized the importance Indonesia places on its multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, highlighting the elevation of their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership as a testament to their shared commitment. Both leaders expressed a strong desire to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation.
A key focus of the meeting was on enhancing economic ties. They set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to $18 billion by 2028. This goal reflects the growing economic interdependence and the potential for further collaboration between the two countries.
Recognizing the importance of people-to-people exchanges in fostering lasting friendship, Maharani stressed the need to promote greater interaction between the citizens of Indonesia and Vietnam. She also highlighted the significance of strengthening cooperation between political parties, particularly between Indonesian political parties and the Communist Party of Vietnam.
To Lam reciprocated Maharani's sentiments, congratulating Indonesia on its remarkable achievements across various sectors. He expressed confidence that the Indonesian people would continue to achieve new successes in the future.
Both leaders acknowledged the pivotal roles Vietnam and Indonesia play within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). They affirmed their commitment to working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. They also emphasized that as reliable partners, Vietnam and Indonesia share many common interests and perspectives.
This meeting took place prior to To Lam's departure for Singapore, where he is scheduled to undertake a three-day official visit. The discussions in Jakarta have laid a strong foundation for continued cooperation and collaboration between Indonesia and Vietnam, setting a positive tone for future engagements.
