Korea and Egypt Revise Higher Education MOU to Strengthen AI Cooperation

SEOUL — Marking the occasion of a South Korea-Egypt summit, the Ministry of Education announced on the 8th that it has revised the "Memorandum of Understanding on Higher Education Cooperation between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Arab Republic of Egypt."

The two nations originally signed an MOU back in 2016, establishing a foundational framework for sharing knowledge, experience, and boosting human exchanges within the higher education sector. Since then, they have maintained steady collaboration through initiatives such as the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) program and the Leading University International Cooperation project.

This latest MOU revision reflects rapid changes in the global educational landscape over the past decade.

Crucially, the updated agreement outlines specific priority areas for cooperation, including artificial intelligence (AI) education, digital transformation, sustainable development, and the internationalization of higher education. The Ministry of Education emphasized that this update positions both countries to jointly address key challenges of the future society.

Additionally, the revised framework supports the development of joint degree programs and collaborative curricula between higher education institutions to invigorate human exchanges. It also establishes a Joint Working Group (JWG) to facilitate active policy exchanges.

"This revision holds great significance as it updates the cooperation framework established a decade ago to match the demands of our changing times," stated Minister of Education Choi Kyo-jin. "Moving forward, I hope both nations will continue to tackle challenges like AI advancement and higher education internationalization through ongoing communication and cooperation."
