Singapore Pioneers Maritime Digital Twin for Port Operations and Emission Reduction

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), in collaboration with the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), unveiled its first maritime digital twin on March 24, 2025. This digital twin is a simulation model that integrates real-time data to improve maritime operational management and enhance decision-making within Singapore's maritime domain.

Key Features and Expected Benefits:

Real-time Data Integration: Integrates real-time data from vessels, port operations, and environmental sensors to maximize operational efficiency.
AI and Predictive Analytics: Utilizes AI and predictive analytics to optimize port operations, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions.
Enhanced Safety Management and Emergency Response: Supports risk assessments for incidents such as oil spills and gas leaks, strengthening safety management and improving emergency response capabilities.
Collaboration and Innovation: Enables collaboration between businesses and researchers with MPA to develop and test new operational concepts and digital solutions through the maritime digital twin.
Pilot Operations in Late 2025: Pilot operations using the digital twin are scheduled to commence in the second half of 2025.

Singapore's Digitalization Efforts:

MPA has recently established a partnership with Malaysia's MISC Berhad, focusing on innovation, research and development, and pilot operational activities. Additionally, they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Microsoft for a pilot project utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins to optimize vessel route planning, enhance maritime operational safety, and reduce carbon emissions. Efforts are also underway to reduce vessel turnaround times in ports through improved on-time vessel arrivals.

Expected Impact:

The development of this maritime digital twin is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and safety of Singapore's port operations, while also contributing to the creation of a sustainable maritime environment. Furthermore, it is anticipated that Singapore will play a pivotal role in leading the digitalization of the maritime industry through the development of innovative digital solutions.
