The maritime industry is undergoing a major transformation, and The Nautical Institute Singapore Conference in 2025 is set to lead discussions at the forefront of these changes. Under the theme "Maritime 4.0 – Embracing Digitalization, Sustainability, and Well-being," the conference, scheduled for July 17th at Furama City Centre, Singapore, is expected to provide a timely platform for maritime professionals, regulators, and technology leaders to communicate and collaborate amidst growing interest in digital innovation, environmental responsibility, and seafarer welfare.

Reaffirming Singapore's Global Leadership

The event will be graced by the presence of Mr. Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), as the Guest of Honor. His attendance signifies Singapore's reaffirmed global leadership in maritime innovation and sustainability. Singapore has consistently pursued various policies and investments to lead the Maritime 4.0 era, including the development of smart ports, autonomous vessel technologies, and the adoption of eco-friendly shipping solutions. Notably, Mr. Ang Wee Keong has repeatedly expressed his strong commitment to building Singapore's digital maritime ecosystem and nurturing maritime talent, raising expectations for the vision he will present at this conference.

Keynote Speeches by Prominent Industry Leaders

Two distinguished industry leaders will share their insightful perspectives through keynote speeches at the conference.

John Martin, CEO of Gard Singapore: With over 34 years of international marine insurance experience, including in key markets such as the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, he has played a crucial role in expanding P&I (Protection and Indemnity) and H&M (Hull and Machinery) services in Southeast Asia since establishing Gard Singapore's office in 2014. His speech is anticipated to provide a deep understanding of the latest trends and future outlook in maritime industry risk management and insurance. As one of the world's largest marine insurers, Gard's presentation of new insurance products and strategies in line with the evolving maritime industry will be closely watched.

Mark Cameron, Executive Vice President and COO of Ardmore Shipping Asia: Drawing from over 40 years of onboard and executive experience, he will share valuable insights into vessel management, technical operations, and sustainability practices. Ardmore Shipping is actively involved in developing sustainable shipping solutions, and his speech is expected to offer real-world experiences on how sustainability is implemented in practical shipping operations. In particular, there is anticipation for specific measures and technological application cases for achieving the shipping industry's decarbonization goals.

Three Core Pillars: Digitalization, Sustainability, and Seafarer Well-being

The conference program is structured around three core themes that reflect the changing priorities of the maritime industry.

Digitalization: The digitalization session will focus on innovations in navigation systems, pilotage, and automation.

ECDIS S-100: Discussions on S-100, the next-generation standard for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), are expected to contribute to enhanced maritime safety and efficiency. S-100 provides richer information than the existing S-57 and can be integrated with various marine data, making it a crucial foundation for smart vessel operations.
AI Application in Bridge Operations: In-depth discussions will take place on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology can be utilized in ship navigation and operations. Case studies and future visions for AI-based decision-making systems, collision avoidance systems, and optimized route planning are anticipated.
Digital Pilotage: Digital technology-driven pilotage systems can significantly improve the efficiency and safety of port entry and departure. Discussions are expected to cover pilotage simulations incorporating Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, as well as support for pilots' work through real-time data sharing.
Sustainability: The sustainability session will focus on future alternative fuels for the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

Ammonia, Hydrogen, and Nuclear Power: The potential of ammonia, hydrogen, and nuclear propulsion for marine fuels will be discussed in depth. The discussion will cover technical challenges, safety, infrastructure development issues, and environmental impacts of each fuel.
Crew Preparedness and Operational Safety: Crucially, there will be discussions on crew preparedness and operational safety for vessels using these alternative fuels. Key agenda items are expected to include seafarer training for new fuel systems, emergency response procedures, and securing the safe storage and supply of fuel. In line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s strengthened regulations for marine environmental protection, discussions will also be active on shipping companies' strategies for transitioning to eco-friendly vessels, along with supporting technology development and policy measures.
Seafarer Well-being: The seafarer well-being session will address important issues aimed at improving the quality of life for seafarers, who are the core of the maritime industry.

Mental Health: Seafarers' mental health issues, due to long voyages, isolated environments, and work stress, are recognized as serious. Discussions will focus on support programs, counseling services, and stress management strategies to protect and promote seafarers' mental health.
Diversity: Enhancing diversity within the shipping industry has become an essential element. Discussions will cover fostering an inclusive working environment for female seafarers and seafarers of various nationalities, eliminating discrimination, and ensuring equal opportunities.
Mentoring: Mentoring programs, where experienced seafarers impart knowledge and experience to new seafarers, play a vital role in strengthening and retaining maritime talent. Discussions will cover effective mentoring program development and the positive impact of mentoring on seafarers' career development.
Maritime Career Development: Providing continuous education and training opportunities for seafarers is crucial in line with changes in the maritime industry. Discussions will address career development support throughout seafarers' lifecycles, including acquiring new skills, obtaining certifications, and retraining programs for transitioning to shore-based roles.

What Participants Can Expect

Participants will have the opportunity to gain the following at the conference:

Over 20 Expert Speakers: More than 20 experts from various sectors of the maritime industry will share the latest knowledge and insights.
Panel Discussions and Expert-Led Keynote Speeches: In-depth panel discussions along with keynotes from industry leaders will illuminate major issues in the current and future maritime industry from multiple perspectives.
Abundant Networking Opportunities: Various networking opportunities will be provided to interact with maritime professionals, policymakers, technology developers, and relevant industry stakeholders, and to build collaborative relationships.
On-site Media Access: On-site media access will be permitted for interviews and reporting, allowing for widespread dissemination of the conference's key contents.
