DAEJEON, SOUTH KOREA – The Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra is set to transport audiences back in time with a powerful performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 in G minor, Op. 103, subtitled "The Year 1905." This evocative work, a musical depiction of the tumultuous events of the 1905 Russian Revolution, will headline the orchestra's fourth Masters Series concert of 2025 on Thursday, April 10th, at 7:30 PM at the prestigious Daejeon Arts Center Concert Hall.

The Masters Series, the Daejeon Philharmonic's flagship regular concert program, has garnered a strong reputation for its exceptional musical execution and insightful interpretations of core classical repertoire, attracting discerning music lovers from across South Korea. This upcoming performance promises to be another compelling installment in the series.

Leading the orchestra will be the esteemed Artistic Director Yoojakyung, known for her nuanced conducting and profound musical understanding. Adding further artistic brilliance to the evening, the concert will feature a special collaboration with the internationally acclaimed violinist Baek Ju-young.

Professor Baek, currently a faculty member at Seoul National University's College of Music, boasts an impressive academic background, including degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Prior to the emotionally charged symphony, Baek will grace the stage with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's majestic Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61. Her deeply personal and insightful rendition is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives to this beloved masterpiece.

The second half of the concert will be dedicated to Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11, a significant work of the 20th century. Composed in 1957, the symphony vividly portrays the key events of the 1905 Russian Revolution, particularly the "Bloody Sunday" massacre in St. Petersburg. Through its four movements – "The Palace Square," "The Ninth of January," "Eternal Memory," and "The Tocsin" – Shostakovich masterfully conveys the atmosphere of political oppression, simmering social unrest, and the tragic violence of the era. The symphony is renowned for its dramatic intensity, powerful orchestration, and poignant melodies, serving as a potent musical commentary on historical events.

Tickets for this highly anticipated performance are available for reservation until 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 9th, through the official websites of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra (www.dpo.or.kr), the Daejeon Arts Center (www.artdj.kr), and the online ticketing platform Interpark. For further information, patrons are encouraged to visit the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra's website or contact their office directly at ☎042-270-8382~8.

A representative of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra emphasized the significance of the program, stating, "Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 transcends mere musical notes; it is a powerful narrative of human suffering, resilience in the face of struggle, and the enduring hope for a better future. We invite audiences to join us for a unique and moving experience, where the powerful language of music allows us to reflect on the profound historical context of 1905 Russia." This performance offers a compelling opportunity to witness the intersection of music and history, brought to life by the exceptional talents of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra and violinist Baek Ju-young.
