The National Library of Korea, in collaboration with Storage Book & Film, has officially opened its doors to the 2026 Seoul Publishers Table (SPT), marking a monumental celebration for the country's independent publishing community. Running from September 11 to September 13 at the National Library of Korea located in Seocho-gu, Seoul, this year's festival stands as South Korea's largest independent publication fair. Beyond traditional book exhibitions and sales, the three-day event carries profound significance by bridging grassroots creative endeavors with permanent national archiving, ensuring that diverse independent voices are securely preserved as part of the nation's intellectual heritage. 

Empowering Creators and Fostering Public Engagement

Launched initially in 2013, the Seoul Publishers Table has evolved into a cornerstone platform where independent creators, writers, editors, and readers converge. Admission to the festival is entirely free, inviting members of the general public to explore an expansive array of zines, independent magazines, photobooks, and experimental literature that typically bypass mainstream commercial distribution channels. Visitors have the unique opportunity to interact directly with authors, gaining profound insights into the creative spark, conceptualization, and hands-on manufacturing processes behind each distinct publication. 

The outdoor courtyard of the National Library transforms into a dynamic cultural hub during the event, hosting author reading sessions featuring 13 distinct creative teams. Additionally, visitors can immerse themselves in auditory literary experiences through dedicated stations offering free access to 13 curated independent audiobooks. 

Insightful Programs, Book Talks, and Workshops

A robust lineup of lectures, masterclasses, and open dialogues anchors the 2026 festival, catering to aspiring creators and avid readers alike. Renowned novelist Kim Geum-hee takes the stage to share her multifaceted experiences as a reader, writer, and publisher, shedding light on the emotional and structural realities of literary creation. Yuki Aima, director at D&Department, leads a compelling book talk centered around sustainable food cultures and eco-conscious living. Furthermore, Lee Jeong-mi, CEO of Anon Books, and Park Hye-jin, CEO of Daram Publishing, engage in an in-depth, candid dialogue themed "Genuinely Realistic Publishing Life," offering practical advice and unvarnished truths about navigating the modern publishing landscape. 

For those eager to engage in hands-on artistic practices, the festival provides interactive workshops, including hand-binding notebook creation sessions and experimental drawing classes. These programs underscore the event's core philosophy: empowering everyday readers to realize their potential as active content creators who can transform personal narratives into tangible physical books. 

Securing Independent Works as National Intellectual Property

A primary mission of hosting the 2026 Seoul Publishers Table at the National Library of Korea is to demystify institutional archival processes for independent creators. To achieve this, the library operates dedicated legal deposit promotion booths directly on-site. These booths guide independent authors and small-scale publishers through the legal deposit system, explaining how depositing their works ensures permanent preservation within the national repository for future generations.

Recognizing the legal hurdles and copyright complexities frequently faced by independent writers—who often operate without corporate legal backing—the Korea Copyright Commission has partnered with the festival to provide professional, on-site copyright consultations. These personalized counseling sessions help creators safeguard their intellectual property rights, manage licensing agreements, and understand legal protections in an era of rapid digital and print content sharing.

Park Joo-ok, Director of the Knowledge Information Management Division at the National Library of Korea, emphasized the evolving role of the national institution through this partnership. "The National Library of Korea transcends its traditional boundaries as a passive collection repository," Director Park stated. "We aim to serve as a steadfast and reliable supporter for creators—helping them connect with wider audiences, protect their rightful intellectual properties, and ensure that their unique books are securely preserved as invaluable national knowledge resources."
