Allegations of Rape and Torture of Gaza Activists Spark International Outrage; Israel Denies Claims

International outrage is intensifying following harrowing allegations from foreign aid activists who claim they were subjected to sexual assault and torture while detained by Israeli authorities. The activists, part of a humanitarian aid flotilla intercepted by the Israeli military, made the shocking revelations immediately following their deportation.

According to a report by Reuters and other foreign media outlets on May 22 (local time), the "Global Sumud" Gaza aid flotilla organizers announced via their official Telegram channel that "at least 15 cases of sexual violence, including rape, occurred during the detention period." The group further condemned the Israeli military's methods, stating that forces fired rubber bullets at close range, fracturing the bones of dozens of participants. "The world is witnessing the suffering of our participants, but this is only a fraction of the daily brutality inflicted by Israel on Palestinian prisoners," the organizers declared.

Survivors have provided graphic testimonies of the abuse. Luca Pozzi, an Italian economist aboard the flotilla, recounted being stripped naked, thrown to the ground, and kicked with military boots. "Many were assaulted with tasers, some suffered sexual violence, and access to legal counsel was strictly denied," Pozzi revealed. Sabrina Chariq, who assisted in the repatriation of 37 French activists, also confirmed that several participants gave specific testimonies regarding rape and sexual assault.

Global Backlash and Legal Inquiries
The updates have triggered swift diplomatic and legal actions across Europe. Rome prosecutors have formally launched an investigation, expanding initial inquiries from unlawful abduction to include charges of torture and sexual violence. The Italian prosecution plans to summon returned activists to document direct testimonies. Meanwhile, Germany’s Foreign Ministry labeled the allegations "extremely grave" and demanded a thorough, transparent explanation from Tel Aviv.

Earlier, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung strongly criticized Israel’s actions during a cabinet meeting, stating that intercepting a humanitarian flotilla with South Korean citizens on board violated fundamental international norms. President Lee also referenced the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, triggering a sharp political debate back in Seoul regarding international judicial cooperation and sovereignty.

Israel's Total Denial
The Israeli Prison Service (IPS) swiftly dismissed the allegations as "false." In an official statement, an IPS spokesperson asserted, "The claims raised are malicious lies with no factual basis. All detainees and prisoners are managed strictly under the law and Ministry of Health guidelines, supervised by professionally trained personnel, with their basic rights fully guaranteed."

The crisis began on May 20, when the Israeli military intercepted 50 aid vessels in international waters—not Israeli territorial seas—as they attempted to deliver relief goods to the blockaded Gaza Strip. Over 430 foreign activists were arrested. The situation escalated dramatically into a diplomatic standoff when Israel's far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, posted a video mocking the detained volunteers, prompting governments worldwide to summon Israeli ambassadors. While Israel hastily deported all 430 foreign nationals in an attempt to contain the political fallout, the looming allegations of severe human rights abuses ensure that international condemnation will not easily subside.
