Lotte and KAIST Complete New R&D Center to Spearhead Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality Solutions

Lotte Group and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have officially inaugurated the "Lotte x KAIST R&D Center" at the KAIST main campus in Daejeon. Held on September 11, the completion ceremony marked a major milestone in strengthening industry-academia collaboration aimed at addressing critical global sustainability challenges, including climate change and carbon neutrality. Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin attended the ceremony alongside KAIST President Bae Choong-shik, key corporate executives, and distinguished university faculty members to celebrate the opening through a ribbon-cutting event.

The newly established R&D center was realized through a collaborative funding model, backed by a 10 billion won ($7.5 million USD) building donation from Lotte complemented by KAIST's internal institutional funds. Spanning a total floor area of 4,298 square meters, the facility features one basement level and six above-ground floors, engineered specifically to foster high-impact scientific research and rapid commercialization.

The research conducted within the center focuses heavily on three core pillars: biological sustainability, carbon-neutral energy, materials and engineering, and advanced food and healthcare. Under these domains, researchers will dive into specialized disciplines such as systems metabolic engineering, biofuels and bioplastics, green hydrogen, renewable energy, and next-generation battery technologies. A primary objective of the center is to bridge the historical gap between academic theory and commercial application. By housing KAIST’s world-class research capabilities and Lotte’s extensive industrial field experience under one roof, the center is designed to execute the complete product lifecycle—from fundamental exploratory research and laboratory experimentation to prototype manufacturing and large-scale technology commercialization.

Furthermore, the partnership builds upon a robust history of cooperation between the two institutions. The collaborative relationship dates back to 2012, when Lotte initiated master's and doctoral sponsored educational programs with KAIST, later expanding into joint talent exchanges and technology transfers. Most notably, in 2022, the establishment of the "Lotte Chemical-KAIST Carbon Neutrality Research Center" yielded significant fruit, successfully executing eight core carbon-neutrality projects and securing 15 distinct patents. Building on this successful foundation, the newly minted R&D center will broaden its scope to tackle strategic core technologies for various Lotte affiliates, spanning semiconductor materials, sustainable energy systems, and advanced bio-healthcare. Breakthrough technologies secured through these initiatives will be directly integrated into Lotte's core business ecosystem to drive future corporate growth.

During the ceremony, Chairman Shin emphasized the vital significance of boundary-pushing collaboration. He noted that the R&D center is expected to serve as a strong foothold for industry-academia cooperation, transcending traditional boundaries between higher education and corporate enterprise to unlock greater possibilities. Addressing the researchers, Shin stated, "Lotte will stand as a reliable and steadfast companion, ensuring that our professors and students can pursue bold research and creative experimentation without the fear of failure." In recognition of his continuous contributions to building research infrastructure and fostering advanced academic-industrial cooperation—which also included receiving an honorary doctorate in business administration from KAIST earlier this year—Chairman Shin was presented with a plaque of appreciation by the university.

Echoing these sentiments, KAIST President Bae Choong-shik remarked that the completion of the building signifies not an endpoint, but rather the true beginning of a profound new partnership. He added that by combining KAIST’s cutting-edge academic prowess with Lotte’s dynamic industrial and commercialization execution power, both institutions will effectively translate laboratory ideas and scientific breakthroughs into tangible real-world economic value, ultimately creating new national growth engines and sustainable future solutions for South Korea.
