Seoul, South Korea - The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on October 10th that it will be implementing a battery safety certification system and a battery tracking system for electric vehicles starting from February next year. The ministry will be opening a 42-day public comment period on the revised subordinate legislation from November 11th.
Battery Safety Certification
Under the new system, the government will directly certify the safety of electric vehicle batteries, replacing the previous self-certification system where manufacturers were responsible for certifying their own products. Battery manufacturers will be required to submit a battery specification sheet to the Ministry, including details such as the manufacturer, production location, model, and key materials.
Battery Tracking System
The battery tracking system will assign a unique identification number to each battery and register it in the vehicle registration certificate. This will allow for the tracking of a battery's entire lifecycle, from manufacturing to operation and disposal. The identification number will consist of up to 24 characters and include the production date.
