Berlin, Germany – A disturbing trend has emerged in Germany, with hate crimes targeting the LGBTQ+ community skyrocketing in 2023. According to police statistics released on Friday, the number of such incidents surged by nearly 50% compared to the previous year.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser expressed deep concern over the figures, labeling them "shocking." A total of 1,785 hate crimes were directed at lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals, accounting for over 10% of all hate crimes reported in Germany.

The BKA, Germany's federal police agency, reported that violence was involved in approximately 18% of these hate crimes. The majority of victims were men, and the majority of suspects were German nationals.

These statistics highlight a growing problem of intolerance and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community in Germany. While the country has made significant strides in LGBTQ+ rights, these figures underscore the urgent need for increased awareness, education, and legal protection.
