Allegations of Workplace Harassment Against Late MBC Weather Caster Oh Yo-anna Spark Investigation

SEOUL – Allegations of workplace harassment against the late Oh Yo-anna, a beloved weather caster for MBC, have surfaced, prompting an investigation into the matter. 1  Oh Yo-anna passed away last September, and her sudden death has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her passing.

A complaint was filed on January 28th with the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor by an online user who claims to be acting on behalf of Oh Yo-anna. The complaint alleges that Oh Yo-anna was subjected to continuous harassment by two of her colleagues, also weather casters at MBC.

The complainant stated that Oh Yo-anna was unfairly blamed for mistakes made by her colleagues and was frequently called back to work after hours, causing her significant mental distress. The complaint also alleges that Oh Yo-anna had informed four MBC officials about the harassment but that no action was taken.

The complainant cited Article 76-3 of the Labor Standards Act, which mandates that employers take necessary protective measures in cases of workplace harassment, even if the victim does not explicitly request it. The complainant argues that MBC failed to fulfill its legal obligations in this regard.

The complaint calls for an investigation into MBC's alleged negligence in addressing the harassment, as well as the possibility of involuntary manslaughter. It also urges an inquiry into the two weather casters accused of harassment, citing potential violations of Article 76-2 of the Labor Standards Act, which prohibits workplace harassment.

The complainant emphasized the importance of this case in addressing workplace harassment issues and holding employers accountable for their legal responsibilities. They urged the police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor to collaborate closely to uncover the truth and establish clear legal consequences for workplace harassment.

Oh Yo-anna's passing last September was met with an outpouring of grief from viewers. She had been a popular figure on MBC's weather reports and had even appeared on the tvN show "You Quiz on the Block." Prior to her career in broadcasting, she had been a trainee with JYP Entertainment and was crowned "Suk" in the 2019 Chunhyang Pageant.

The allegations of workplace harassment against Oh Yo-anna have raised serious concerns about the culture at MBC and the treatment of its employees. The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched as it could have significant implications for the prevention and handling of workplace harassment cases in the future.
