The sounds of tradition passed down by Jeong Yeong-do, holder of Gyeonggi-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 61 Jarigeodi, and his apprentices.

The Bucheon Cultural Center will host the "10th Jarigeodi Traditional Cultural Sound Performance" on Friday, October 23, at 10:00 AM at the Bucheon Hanok Experience Village. This event was organized to introduce rituals and sounds that have been handed down locally to citizens and to broaden public interest in the preservation and transmission of local intangible cultural heritage.

Jarigeodi is a traditional ritual performed after a funeral when a person passes away at home, also referred to as "Jipgasim" or "Neokgeodi." As a ritual that prays for the daily lives of the living while sending off the deceased, it reflects the community's perception of death and attitude toward life. Given that it has become increasingly rare to witness due to changes in funeral customs and living environments, it is vital to examine the significance and transmission value embodied in the ritual.

This performance features Jeong Yeong-do, holder of Gyeonggi-do Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 61 "Jarigeodi," alongside his apprentices. Presenting the traditions they have sustained through their bodies and voices over a long period in a single venue, they provide an opportunity for citizens to understand Jarigeodi and reflect on the value of intangible cultural heritage remaining in the region. On this day, Jeong Yeong-do and his apprentices will also conduct a cheondojae (a Buddhist memorial service) to console the spirits of those who died in the line of duty while performing national duties. Serving as an occasion to mourn those who passed away while fulfilling their duties and to pray for their peace, the event shares the meaning of comfort and devotion embedded in traditional rituals.

Marking its 10th anniversary this year, the event serves as an occasion where traditional transmitters and citizens together reflect on the cultural value and contemporary significance of Jarigeodi. Through this, it is expected to enhance public understanding of local intangible cultural heritage and broaden consensus on the necessity of its preservation and transmission.
