Commendations for Dokdo Defense Contributors; Winning Works of the Dokdo Literary and Artistic Contest and Creative Folk Paintings on Display until the 23rd
Marking October as "Dokdo Month," Gyeongsangbuk-do has brought together youth education, commendations for Dokdo defense contributors, and historical and cultural exhibitions in one place. The initiative aims to instill the history and value of Dokdo in the future generation and broaden their awareness of territorial sovereignty.
The "2026 Dokdo Month Commemorative Event" was held on the 21st at the auditorium of the Eastern Provincial Office. Approximately 100 people attended, including members of the Provincial Council's Dokdo Defense Special Committee, students and parents from the Pohang Youth Green Academy, and contributors to Dokdo defense.
The event kicked off with a Dokdo flash mob performed jointly by employees of the East Coast Regional Headquarters and the youths. Kim Young-soo, Director of the Dokdo Research Institute at the Northeast Asian History Foundation, delivered a special lecture titled "The Russo-Japanese War and Dokdo," shedding light on the history of Dokdo and the significance of territorial sovereignty.
The province presented commendations to contributors of Dokdo defense, including Inspector Kim Nam-soo of the Ulleung Guard Unit who carries out missions on-site in Dokdo, to encourage their dedication.
At the venue, winning works from the 16th Dokdo Literary and Artistic Contest and creative folk paintings featuring Dokdo and An Yong-bok were displayed. The exhibition continues at the Eastern Provincial Office until the 23rd.
In response to the Shimane Prefectural Assembly in Japan designating February 22 as "Takeshima Day" every year, Gyeongsangbuk-do enacted "Dokdo Month" by ordinance on July 4, 2005.
Choi Young-sook, head of the East Coast Regional Headquarters of Gyeongsangbuk-do, stated, "I hope that the future generation of youths will learn the history and value of Dokdo through this event and cultivate a heart that loves Dokdo," adding, "Gyeongsangbuk-do will continue various educational, cultural, and other activities to widely promote the beautiful Dokdo of the Republic of Korea."
