A Journey Through Time: Gyeongju's Fashionable Way to Explore History

Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom, is renowned for its rich historical sites and cultural heritage. However, a new, vibrant trend is transforming the way travelers experience the city's old-world charm. Visitors are increasingly seen strolling through Gyeongju's cobblestone streets and alleyways adorned in a diverse array of period costumes, from traditional hanbok to chic retro-modern wear. This widespread phenomenon has given rise to a flourishing industry of costume rental shops, particularly concentrated in popular tourist hubs like Hwangnidan-gil, the Daereungwon area, and Gyochon Village.

The spectrum of available attire is broad, catering to various tastes and eras. The most prominent is, of course, the hanbok, Korea's traditional clothing. It's a delightful sight to see couples, friends, and families dressed in elegant hanbok, adding a splash of color to the city's historic backdrops. The hanbok experience has evolved, now encompassing not only classic, formal styles but also modern "daily hanbok," which are more comfortable and stylish for extended wear. Rental prices for hanbok typically range from ₩10,000 to ₩30,000 for a few hours, with full-day options also available. Dozens of rental shops line the streets, making it easy for visitors to find the perfect outfit to showcase their own personal flair and capture stunning photos.

Another popular choice is the Gaehwagi (Korean Enlightenment Era) look. This style, reflecting the fashion of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offers a unique blend of Western and Korean influences. Visitors donning sophisticated dresses, dapper suits, and stylish hats create a distinct vintage atmosphere. This trend is especially popular in the trendy cafes and boutiques of Hwangnidan-gil, where the modern architecture of the shops provides a striking contrast to the retro outfits, making for highly photogenic moments.

Completing the costume-play experience are vintage school uniforms, which have become a favorite among younger travelers. This playful, nostalgic trend allows friends to recreate youthful memories and enjoy a more lighthearted exploration of the city. Rental services for these uniforms are also widely available, often at prices comparable to or slightly lower than hanbok rentals.

For visitors planning a trip during major holidays like Seollal (Lunar New Year) or Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving), Gyeongju offers an additional incentive. The city often provides free admission to historical sites for visitors wearing hanbok. This policy applies to key attractions operated by the city, including Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, Daereungwon Tomb Complex, Oreung Royal Tombs, and Poseokjeong Pavilion. This generous offer not only encourages the appreciation of traditional culture but also makes the costume experience more affordable and accessible.

This booming costume rental culture transforms a simple sightseeing trip into an immersive journey through time. It's a way for visitors to not just observe history but to actively become a part of it, creating lasting memories and shareable "life shots" that perfectly capture Gyeongju's unique blend of the ancient and the modern.
