Busan is rapidly cementing its status as a premier international tourism and medical destination, welcoming nearly 3 million foreign visitors in the first seven months of the year alone. According to data released by the Busan Metropolitan Government, the number of international tourists visiting the coastal city from January to July reached 2,927,674. This figure represents 73.2% of the city’s annual target of 4 million visitors and marks a striking 46.1% increase compared to the same period last year, significantly outpacing the national average growth rate of 21.3%.

This upward trajectory reflects a remarkable post-pandemic recovery and a structural shift in Busan's tourism appeal. In 2022, the annual number of foreign visitors stood at a modest 482,305. By 2024, that figure surged to nearly 2.93 million, and by the end of last year, Busan surpassed the milestone of 3.64 million annual foreign visitors. With 400,000 to 500,000 tourists arriving monthly during the early summer peak of June and July, city officials are confident that the 4 million milestone will be effortlessly cleared by the end of the year.

A breakdown of cumulative visitor statistics by country highlights a diverse and expanding global demographic. Taiwan led the influx with 605,000 visitors, closely followed by China with 594,000, and Japan with 340,000. Notably, the United States demonstrated an explosive growth rate; despite the lack of direct flight routes between Busan and American cities, visitors from the U.S. surged by 78.4% year-on-year to reach 259,675.

This surge in international foot traffic has naturally translated into a massive economic boom, with total foreign credit card spending in Busan reaching 742,30억 won (742.3 billion won) between January and July—a 50.8% increase from the previous year. The most striking driver of this spending is the medical tourism sector, which skyrocketed by 118.4% compared to the same period last year. Busan now accounts for 37% of all medical tourism expenditures outside of Seoul, firmly securing the number one spot nationwide for regional medical tourism.

This booming medical and shopping trend has visibly transformed the city’s economic geography. Traditionally, Haeundae-gu—famed for its iconic beach and luxury hotels—consistently held the top spot for foreign tourist expenditures. However, for the January-to-July period this year, Busan Jin-gu dethroned Haeundae-gu to claim the number one ranking in foreign spending. Busan Jin-gu encompasses Seomyeon and Jeonpo-dong, areas immensely popular among younger demographics and dense with major commercial hubs like Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch, as well as a high concentration of dermatology and plastic surgery clinics. The centralization of medical tourism and aesthetic procedures in this district has effectively driven the city's overall consumption growth.

Commercial data mirrors this localized boom. At Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch, foreign sales jumped by 125% between January and May. During a peak two-week window from June 1 to June 14, when various tourism demands converged, foreign sales surged by a staggering 190% compared to the same period in the previous year.

To maintain this growth momentum, Busan is ramping up its global promotional efforts and infrastructure improvements. The city government is preparing for a packed autumn and winter calendar featuring major international events, including the Busan International Film Festival, the large-scale cultural convergence event "Festival Siywol," and the world-renowned Busan Fireworks Festival in November.

To ensure a seamless experience for incoming travelers, local authorities have installed "Visit Busan Pass" kiosks at Gimhae International Airport and Busan Station. Furthermore, the city is actively collaborating with its 16 autonomous districts and counties to upgrade multilingual guidance systems, refine tourist infrastructure, and foster a more welcoming, convenient environment for visitors from around the globe.
