While the tech world has fully embraced the USB-C era, one engineer is taking a nostalgic—and ironic—step backward. A "reverse-innovation" case has surfaced, allowing the latest iPhone 17 Pro to be charged using Apple’s retired Lightning cable.
The Engineering Behind the "Retro" Charge
Ken Pillonel, a Swiss engineer and well-known tech YouTuber, has unveiled a custom-built protective case designed specifically for the USB-C exclusive iPhone 17 Pro. The case features a built-in miniature conversion circuit that bridges the internal USB-C connection to an external Lightning port.
When the iPhone is slid into the case, the internal male connector slots into the phone’s USB-C port. Users can then plug a legacy Lightning cable directly into the bottom of the case to juice up their device.
Key Features of the Prototype:
Lightning Connectivity: Enables charging and data sync via old Apple cables.
Seamless Integration: Precision-aligned internal connectors.
MagSafe Compatible: The case retains magnetic alignment for wireless charging functionality.
Innovation or Satire?
If this feels like a prank, that’s because it is. The project was revealed as an April Fool’s Day special, created in response to humorous requests from Pillonel’s subscribers who joked about missing their tangled drawers of old cables.
Pillonel is no stranger to port manipulation. He previously gained global fame for being the first to successfully transplant a USB-C port into an iPhone X and AirPods charging cases long before Apple made the official switch.
While the "Lightning Case" isn't headed for mass production, it serves as a witty commentary on the evolution of hardware standards and the lingering presence of legacy tech in our junk drawers.
