Ancient Ginkgo Tree in South Korea Found to Be Over 1,300 Years Old

Wonju, South Korea – A recent study has revealed that the Ginkgo tree located in Bangye-ri, Wonju, South Korea, is significantly older than previously thought. Initially estimated to be between 800 and 900 years old, new research conducted by the National Forest Science Institute has determined the tree’s age to be a staggering 1,317 years.

This ancient tree, designated as a natural monument, has been a popular tourist destination due to its impressive size and beautiful autumn foliage. Standing at a height of 32 meters with a maximum circumference of 16.27 meters, the Ginkgo tree has a massive canopy that spreads out in all directions.   

To determine the tree’s exact age, researchers employed LiDAR scanning technology and a comprehensive database of tree age estimates. This non-invasive method allowed them to gather detailed information about the tree's growth patterns without causing any damage.
