Prestigious British School, Wycombe Abbey, to Establish First International Campus on Yeongjong Island

INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA – Yeongjong Island, a key component of the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), is poised to welcome its inaugural international school with the selection of the esteemed British independent girls' school, Wycombe Abbey, as the preferred bidder. The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZA) announced the decision following a rigorous evaluation process involving seven foreign educational institutions from the UK, USA, and Canada. The new campus is slated to open in the latter half of 2028, marking a significant step in enhancing the island's appeal as a global hub.

Established in 1896, Wycombe Abbey boasts a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and a commitment to developing future leaders. The main school in the United Kingdom consistently achieves outstanding results, with over 90% of its 2024 graduates gaining admission to the world's top 100 universities. This impressive track record and the school's focus on holistic education were key factors in IFEZA's decision.

"We have a long and proud history of nurturing leaders and innovators," stated Jo Duncan, Headmaster of Wycombe Abbey's UK campus. "We are excited about the opportunity to bring our educational philosophy and high standards to Yeongjong Island."

IFEZA Commissioner Yoon Won-seok highlighted several reasons for selecting Wycombe Abbey, including its "renowned reputation, proven operational capabilities, successful experience in establishing and managing overseas branch schools, robust financial planning, and strong potential for promotion and positive engagement with the local community." Wycombe Abbey has successfully established five branch campuses in Greater China, demonstrating its experience in adapting its educational model to an international context.

The Yeongjong campus will be located on an educational research facility site within the Midan City development. Plans for the state-of-the-art facility include academic buildings, a performance hall, a library, and comprehensive sports facilities, creating a well-rounded educational environment for students. The land and school buildings will be provided on a rent-free basis for the initial five years, after which the school will be expected to either pay rent or purchase the property.

A significant aspect of the new international school is its capacity to enroll domestic students, with a cap set at 30% of the total student body. The anticipated annual tuition fee is reported to be in the range of 30 to 40 million Korean Won (approximately $22,000 to $29,000 USD based on current exchange rates), positioning it as a premium educational option in the region.

Incheon Metropolitan City Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok emphasized the broader implications of this development: "The introduction of Wycombe Abbey to Yeongjong Island is not merely about expanding our educational infrastructure. It is a strategic move that will attract further foreign investment and significantly contribute to the overall development and global standing of the Yeongjong area."

The establishment of Wycombe Abbey on Yeongjong Island complements the existing international schools in Songdo and Cheongna, completing the educational pillar of the Incheon Free Economic Zone's three key districts. City officials anticipate that this addition will significantly enhance the living conditions for international residents, making Yeongjong Island a more attractive destination for foreign businesses and individuals, thereby bolstering Incheon's competitiveness as a leading international city in Northeast Asia. The arrival of a school with Wycombe Abbey's pedigree is expected to attract not only expatriate families but also Korean families seeking a globally recognized education for their children.
