Trump Declares "At War": Proposals for 40% Hike in Defense Budget Toward $1.5 Trillion

WASHINGTON D.C. — In a historic move reflecting escalating geopolitical tensions, the White House has unveiled a staggering $1.5 trillion defense budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2027. If approved, the plan would mark a nearly 40% increase from current spending levels, representing the most significant military buildup since World War II.

The "Two-Quadrillion Won" Defense Era
The proposal comes in the wake of the conflict with Iran, which has fundamentally shifted the administration's fiscal priorities. The White House outline, released on April 3, seeks to secure approximately $1.5 trillion (roughly 2,000 trillion Korean Won) to bolster national security.

The funding structure consists of two main pillars:

$1.1 trillion to be integrated through the standard general budget process.
$350 billion to be requested through separate emergency legislation.
The administration stated that the funds will be prioritized for missile defense systems, the acquisition of new warships, and massive investments in military infrastructure. Sources suggest an additional supplemental request specifically for ongoing operations in the Iran conflict may follow.

"Guns Over Butter": Drastic Cuts to Domestic Programs
To offset the massive surge in military spending, the White House is proposing aggressive cuts to domestic sectors. The administration aims to slash $73 billion (a 10% reduction) from non-defense discretionary spending by eliminating various climate, housing, and education programs.

Key sectors facing budget cuts include:

NASA: A proposed cut of $5.6 billion, primarily targeting scientific research and exploration.
Social Welfare: Education and housing initiatives are slated for significant downsizing.
Conversely, the budget reinforces the administration’s domestic "law and order" agenda. The Department of Justice is seeking a 13% increase, and substantial funds have been requested to support border enforcement and large-scale deportation operations.

Political Friction and "War-Time" Rhetoric
During a private White House luncheon, President Donald Trump reportedly justified the shift, stating that the federal government must prioritize "defense over welfare."

"We are a nation at war," Trump reportedly told attendees, emphasizing that the primary responsibility of the federal government is "military protection."
This stance has drawn immediate criticism, as it appears to contradict his previous campaign promises to protect social security and welfare programs.

Uphill Battle in Congress
Despite the administration's aggressive push, the budget's passage is far from guaranteed. The proposal must clear both the House and the Senate, where it faces skepticism not only from the opposition but also from fiscal conservatives within the GOP who are wary of the ballooning national debt.

Experts predict a grueling legislative battle as lawmakers weigh the necessity of military expansion against the potential for long-term fiscal instability.
