Seoul, South Korea – Doosan Enerbility, a leading South Korean engineering and construction company, has secured a contract to supply critical components for TerraPower's inaugural small modular reactor (SMR) project.
TerraPower, a nuclear technology company founded by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is developing advanced SMRs that utilize sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). SFRs generate electricity by transferring heat from nuclear fission to liquid sodium coolant, which then produces steam to drive turbines.
Under the agreement, Doosan Enerbility will be responsible for conducting feasibility studies and providing engineering support for the fabrication of key components for TerraPower's first SMR unit. The company is set to begin manufacturing essential components such as reactor vessels, reactor support structures, and core barrel assemblies starting next year.
TerraPower is currently constructing a 345-megawatt SMR at a site near an existing coal-fired power plant in Wyoming, USA. The company submitted a construction permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in March, making it the first fourth-generation SMR developer to do so. With funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, the project is on track for commercial operation in 2030.
