Trump Announces End of Iran War; Hormuz Strait Reopened Tol-Free

WASHINGTON — In a dramatic and historic turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States and Iran have successfully reached a definitive peace agreement, effectively bringing an end to the 106-day war in the Middle East.

The breakthrough marks a monumental shift in global geopolitics, defusing an active military conflict that had severely threatened international security and volatile global energy markets.

President Trump broke the news through his social media platform, Truth Social, at approximately 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time on June 14.

"An agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran has just been finalized. I have fully authorized the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz," President Trump declared in his post. He further added, "Concurrently, I have authorized the immediate lifting of the U.S. Navy's maritime blockade on Iran. Ships of the world, start your engines and let the oil flow!"

The Conclusion of a Fast-Paced Conflict

With this official declaration, the United States and Iran have achieved a de facto end to the war that originally erupted on February 28, 2026. The conflict initially commenced following a coordinated joint military assault on Iran by allied U.S. and Israeli forces. Over the subsequent 106 days, the region remained on a knife-edge, with critical trade routes paralyzed and fears of a wider global conflagration mounting daily.

The critical breakthrough was made possible via intensive diplomatic mediation led by Pakistan. Confirming the successful resolution, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif released an official statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

"Both sides [the United States and Iran] have declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations across all active fronts, including Lebanon," Prime Minister Sharif stated. He expressed profound gratitude to both leaderships for choosing the path of diplomacy and officially announced that a formal peace treaty signing ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland.

Immediate Relief for Global Energy and Trade

The most immediate and tangible economic consequence of the peace agreement is the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. As the world's most vital maritime choke point for global oil transit, the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade and the waiver of any transit fees are expected to immediately ease the crippling inflationary pressures on global energy supply chains.

According to shipping industry analysts, international maritime transport companies have already begun rerouting tankers back into the Persian Gulf following the President's explicit reassurance to "let the oil flow."

Remaining Diplomatic Hurdles

Despite the jubilant announcements from Washington and Islamabad, diplomatic correspondents note that the upcoming summit in Switzerland will be tasked with codifying complex post-war frameworks. Key issues, such as the verifiable management and permanent extraction of Iran's enriched nuclear materials, alongside the stabilization of regional proxy factions, will form the bedrock of the upcoming text.

Nevertheless, the declaration of a permanent cessation of hostilities across all fronts—explicitly encompassing the volatile northern border in Lebanon—provides a much-needed window for long-term stabilization. For now, the global community breathes a collective sigh of relief as the roaring engines of commercial vessels replace the sounds of gunfire in the Persian Gulf.
