Incheon, South Korea – The city of Incheon has announced the designation of the former Incheon mayor’s residence as a registered cultural heritage. The Japanese-style house, located in Shinheung-dong, Incheon Jung-gu, was originally constructed in 1938 and has been recognized for its historical and architectural significance.   

The two-story residence, which includes an underground shelter dating back to the 1940s, served as the official residence for six Incheon mayors from 1954 to 1966. After a period of private ownership, the city of Incheon acquired the property in 2020 and undertook a renovation project to transform it into a public cultural complex. The revitalized space, dubbed "Gindammotungeijip," opened its doors to the public in May 2023.   

The Incheon Cultural Heritage Committee cited the building's well-preserved Japanese architectural style and its association with the city's history as key factors in its decision to grant registered cultural heritage status. The residence offers a tangible connection to the lives and activities of past Incheon mayors, providing valuable insights for local historical research.

Since its opening, Gindammotungeijip has become a popular destination for both residents and visitors. The complex features a "themed study" filled with donated books, a music listening room, and a "gallery alley" adorned with artwork by local artists. In just a few months, the complex has welcomed over 10,000 visitors.

The designation as a registered cultural heritage is expected to further enhance the building's preservation and promote its role as a cultural hub for the city of Incheon.
