Ukraine Strikes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker in Unprecedented Mediterranean Drone Attack

LONDON — The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Thursday that it successfully carried out a long-range drone strike against a Russian "shadow fleet" oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea. This operation marks a significant escalation in Kyiv’s maritime campaign, reaching a vessel approximately 2,000 kilometers away from Ukrainian territory.

The target, identified as the Oman-flagged tanker Kendyll, was struck while navigating neutral waters in the Mediterranean. According to SBU sources and maritime tracking data from MarineTraffic, the vessel was en route from Sikka, India, to the Russian Baltic port of Ust-Luga. At the time of the attack, the ship was positioned off the coast of Libya.

A New Frontier in Naval Warfare
This mission represents the first time Ukrainian forces have conducted a military operation in the Mediterranean since the full-scale Russian invasion began. While Ukraine has previously targeted shadow fleet vessels in the Black Sea, the use of aerial drones at such a vast distance signifies a "unprecedented and new special operation," according to an SBU official.

Footage released by the SBU appears to show a small explosion on the deck of the tanker. While Reuters confirmed the ship in the video matches the Kendyll, the exact timing and coordinates of the filming could not be independently verified. Ukrainian officials emphasized that the vessel was not carrying cargo at the time, preventing any potential environmental disaster or oil spill.

Targeting the "Shadow Fleet"
The "shadow fleet" consists of an estimated 1,000 vessels used by Moscow to bypass international sanctions and fund its war efforts. These ships often obscure their ownership, frequently change flags, and operate with minimal insurance.

Recent reports from Bloomberg suggest that Russian tankers have been hugging the Turkish coastline to avoid Ukrainian strikes in the Black Sea. However, this latest attack proves that moving beyond the Black Sea no longer guarantees safety for Russia’s energy supply chain.

Strategic Implications
Global maritime security experts view this strike as a turning point. Vanguard, a UK-based maritime risk management firm, stated that the incident represents a "drastic expansion" of Ukraine’s unmanned aerial capabilities.

By demonstrating the ability to strike targets thousands of kilometers away, Ukraine has sent a clear message: any vessel linked to the Russian oil export network is now a legitimate and reachable target, regardless of its distance from the frontline.
