Seoul, South Korea – A frigid Arctic blast has swept across South Korea, sending temperatures plummeting and blanketing much of the country in a thick layer of snow. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has issued a severe cold wave warning for Seoul and surrounding metropolitan areas, as well as heavy snowfall alerts for the southwestern regions of Jeolla and Jeju Island.
Temperatures across the peninsula are expected to remain well below freezing throughout the day, with strong winds making the cold feel even more intense. The KMA forecasts morning lows of -18°C to -3°C and afternoon highs of -11°C to 3°C.
Snowfall Accumulations
The Jeolla region and mountainous areas of Jeju Island are bracing for significant snowfall, with accumulations of 5 to 20 centimeters expected, and up to 30 centimeters or more in some coastal areas. Jeju's mountains could see as much as 40 centimeters of snow.
Other regions, including the southwestern part of Gyeonggi Province and the central and southern inland areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do, are also expected to receive light to moderate snowfall.
Travel Disruptions
The severe winter weather is likely to cause significant disruptions to transportation, with reduced visibility and icy roads posing challenges for drivers. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel. Pedestrians should also take extra precautions to prevent slips and falls.
Despite the cold weather, air quality is expected to be good nationwide due to favorable atmospheric conditions.
