A doctor has offered advice to prevent gambling addiction, emphasizing the increasing accessibility of gambling through mobile devices.

Dr. Yeh Chin-bin, vice superintendent of Tri-Service General Hospital and head of its psychiatry department, warned that many people become addicted to gambling after casual attempts during holidays like Lunar New Year. He stressed the importance of immediate action for individuals and their loved ones who recognize signs of gambling addiction to protect their mental well-being.   

Dr. Yeh explained that excessive gambling can stem from both internal factors, such as impulsive behavior, and external influences, such as peer pressure. He noted the common cycle where gamblers, driven by losses, continue to gamble in hopes of recouping their funds.

Individuals prone to impulsivity should actively avoid triggers, such as lottery shops, gambling acquaintances, and even conversations about gambling. Dr. Yeh recommended engaging in alternative activities to divert attention from gambling urges, such as hobbies, exercise, or learning new skills. Establishing coping mechanisms, such as having a friend on speed dial to discourage gambling, is also crucial. Finally, deleting all gambling-related apps and games from mobile devices is strongly encouraged.
