The construction of a 20,000-seat dome stadium, which can be utilized for various purposes such as sports and performances regardless of weather and season, is being promoted at the Universiade Tennis Court and its adjacent site within Duryu Park.

If Daegu City's plans proceed smoothly, it is expected not only to satisfy the high demand for large-scale performances but also to boost the revitalization of professional basketball and the hosting of national and international competitions for indoor sports such as badminton, table tennis, and e-sports.

Regarding the construction of the "Sports and Performance Complex Dome Stadium," Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho revealed plans to participate in a government contest during a briefing held at the Dongin Municipal Office on the 23rd, showing a strong will to push forward.

Having grasped the government's support plan for dome stadium construction in advance and prepared for the contest since the first half of the year, Daegu City formalized its participation and accelerated its bidding efforts as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism officially announced on the 21st plans to select one large-scale and one medium-scale facility nationwide and provide partial government funding.

The currently surviving Daegu Gymnasium, having suffered severe aging since its completion in 1971 and with a capacity of only 3,800 seats, has faced significant physical constraints and limitations in hosting both performances and indoor sports competitions.

Determining that selecting a competitive location is most important for sustainable operation alongside contest selection, Daegu City searched for candidate sites based on public transportation accessibility, land acquisition costs, project feasibility, and synergistic effects with surrounding infrastructure, ultimately selecting the site within Duryu Park as the final candidate.

The candidate site has high accessibility to public transportation such as subways and buses, and since it is city-owned land, it can be utilized without separate land acquisition procedures and costs. If selected, Daegu City plans to go through feasibility studies and deregulation procedures, followed by a detailed design service in 2029 and the start of construction in 2031.

Once the dome stadium is built, it can be organically combined with existing infrastructure such as the nearby E-World and the "National Urban Park Designation" currently being promoted as a key initiative by Daegu City, raising expectations for explosive synergistic effects.

Meanwhile, Daegu City has specific reasons for judging that a scale of 20,000 seats (accommodating up to 28,000 people with convertible seats installed), estimated to cost about 500 billion won in construction expenses, is appropriate.

While some proposed pushing for a "50,000-seat scale," it was judged to have somewhat lower feasibility in terms of future utilization and practicality, as construction costs would exceed 1.2 trillion won.

As construction gets into full swing, Daegu City plans to minimize municipal budget inputs and proceed mainly with government funding and private investment. It plans to create an environment favorable for private investment by attracting high-profit ancillary facilities such as hotels, shopping malls, and conventions inside the dome stadium, and innovating related regulations to allow relaxation of building coverage ratios and floor area ratios.

Mayor Choo emphasized, "The construction of the Daegu Dome Stadium will overcome the limitations of local sports and performance infrastructure, serving as an opportunity to inject new vitality into the local economy through high-value job creation and tourism industry revitalization," adding, "Now that an opportunity to secure government funding has opened up through this Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism contest, we will concentrate all administrative capabilities and resources to achieve the best results."
